Our FAFSA EFC was $9500. USC is giving Deans scholarship & University grant for a total of $33,800. Loans total $5500, leaving approx. $14,400 EFC.

Why isn't there work study?

Do they ever give more than the initial package?

20,000/yr seems like a lot with our EFC.

Does this look average/good/bad compared to others?

Compared to my EFC yours does seem a bit high, but I believe its based on your household income. I’m a single parent and was recently laid off due to the sluggish economy.

nchalakova, cost of attendance is about $53k so you will probably get offered loans and maybe a small amount of non-loan aid totaling around $9k assuming you are not receiving any merit aid.

Also USC does recalcluate you FAFSA EFC by using the CSS profile which takes Home Equity and other savings into account. This could cause your EFC to be higher, in which case you could get less aid.

My son was interview for presidential scholarship but we have not received any letter so far.
Even the FAFSA shows that we can pay $44K we could not pay this amount and I have to stop him going to this college. Like or not this is a reality in this country. Nothing for the middle class, even the kids have better academic skills. I am very disappointed from the whole college process!

nchalakova. I failed to mention you would most likely be offerred other loans to cover your remaining EFC cost. I wish your son the best of luck in getting awarded the Presidential, that would sure help. USC also may offer him additional merit aid. I would wait to see your financial aid package before you get too dissappointed.

I do know what you mean about being stuck in the middle class, it is frustrating to be reliant on merit aid. Loans are an option, but not that appealing.

Hello everybody! My son just received a letter from USC. He got presidential scholarship. We are going to wait to see the financial package.
Now the chance to go there is promising. I think the payments for USC and UIUC are going to be very close and he has to decide where he would like to be the next 4 years. Who can compare the engineering programs USC vs. UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) - Bio-Medical?
