If you did not apply for financial aid for freshman year, are you still elilgible to apply for it in sophomore, junior or senior years?

I am worried because I am an international student who didn't apply for financial aid for the first year because my parents could support me, but due to changed circumstances they may not have the means to support me in later years?

Thanks for any help!!

zmallet, we are theoretically (and almost always practically) not eligible for FA if we do not apply beforehand. We are required to apply for aid unless we currently have proof that our families have the ability to finance four years at Penn.

That said, a lot could happen in four years. I know that an int’l student should immediately report any drastic changes in financial circumstances and see if there’s a solution. I suspect there would be no guarantee of additional money in that case.

However, if I were Penn, I’d consider the student dishonest if s/he currently doesn’t have the ability to pay for 4 years and does not apply for aid.

I think you would be able to. Students from the US, Canada, and Mexico have to re-apply every year for financial aid because of a chance in changing incomes/family circumstances.

That being said, be ready for Penn to say, “Sorry, we have no money for you because you are international” (and domestic students have priority to the money). I wouldn’t say it’s dishonest, per se, but I would just be ready for anything!

Best of luck in admissions----results come out in FOUR days!

Ahhh… that’s unfortunate. I think it’s a bit too late now for me to tell them that I may need financial aid? I’m positive that I can last for at least 1 year without aid though. But after that if they didn’t have funds for me I’d just have to drop out…??? Just like that, because I don’t have money? :/

Penn is like my dream school, it would really suck to miss out simply due to not being able to afford it…

Well, they won’t be just like, “Oh, you need money, bye bye”. But, if you all of a sudden need full coverage (the 58k), they may give you some money, but not enough to cover all 58k.

Oh of course haha!!! I would not expect a full ride when I never applied for FA to begin with. This is optimistic. Of course we could still afford to pay some of it, but I am just a bit concerned about being able to pay complete full fees over 4 years… that is a lot of money, esp for an international…

My parents are trying to change my mind about UPenn because I have received financial aid offers from other schools (which were need blind) ):
