Question about financial aid

a part of my financial aid is work study, and I wanted to know if i could drop the work study and take it as a loan?

I would recommend against it. Not that you can't do it, but that it is definitely not a good idea. It has been definitively proven that students who work a 5-10 hour a week work study job do better at college.

I suspect that's because it will force you to pay attention to scheduling your time, and thus your study and class time too.

As one of those who had a work study job at college (eons ago, I admit :) ) I have to say that was my experience. And you're probably thinking it's going to be horrible, menial work. Not necessarily so!

Yes, freshman year I was assigned to the dining hall, but after a couple of weeks I was serving in the faculty dining room, and got to meet a lot of faculty early on. After that, I worked with faculty directly--faculty assistant to the prof. of international relations. I learned a lot and made a good friend.

My point is, it's not just dead-end work, and has beneficial side effects. You should give it a try.
