Question about foreign language classes

Question to older NU students-

I am thinking of taking French at NU, but I have no prior experience with the language. (I've taken four years of Spanish.)

For anyone who has studied a language at NU from scratch, can you tell me a bit about how the classes are structured? What is learning pace like? When are you expected to speak with ease, and at what point does the instructor conduct the class in the chosen language?

after the end of one year you are pretty much expected to be able to speak in every verb tense.

about 75% in the chosen language in the second quarter, almost 100% in the third quarter

i really hate language and i found it to be such a pain in the ass at northwestern that i transferred schools in part to avoid the requirement.

"i really hate language and i found it to be such a pain in the ass at northwestern"

-Very much so. I think it's by far the most unnecessary requirement in the school.... especially in CAS.

This is worrying, since I just got my Latin AP score and failed to get the 5 that would place me out of language... and I was planning to take japanese to fluency... that would kill my GPA wouldn't it?

^ Same here, arbiter, except with Spanish.

Expected to speak in every verb tense by year one? That's a little unsettling. In high school you aren't expected to do that until the end of year three.

So I take it that if you aren't especially enthusiastic about learning another language, the classes suck.
