Okay, so I'm a sophomore and I'm only in Spanish I right now. I wasn't able to take it last year because of scheduling conflicts (was elected into SGA so it replaced my foreign lang. class). Right now I have my sights set on either Duke, UNC-CH, Yale, or MIT. Most of these colleges recommend 4 units of a foreign language, so I am considering taking Spanish II over the summer to catch up....should I do it or is it a waste of my time?

I would highly suggest it. I have a few slip ups and a mediocre SAT score, but my 7 courses of Spanish and 2 of French definitely made up enough to get me into some schools that wouldn't give me a second look otherwise. At places like Duke, Yale, etc, you need any kind of help you can get to have an edge.

If you want to. If you hate foreign languages as much as I hate William Hung then it's a waste of time. What are you planning on majoring in, by the way? If you're adamantly against Spanish and are applying for, say, a math major, don't bother.

However, if you're neutral about it, I suggest you go for it. It's interesting to learn and always good to know.

Duke has a foreign language requirement. Unless you want to take three semesters of it, take it in high school.
