Question about foreign language requirements

I've heard that 4 semesters of foreign language are required for LSA students. Is this true, and if so, do freshman have to take a language?

Yes, you need 4th semester proficiency in a foreign language and it must be done at Michigan (i.e. you can’t take it at any other college). However annoying it may be, it isn’t particularly difficult to pass out of all 4 semesters if you have a decent background in the language.

You can take the language whenever you want. There are no specific requirements for freshman. For example, I took freshman year english in my sophomore year.

Cant you pass out of it with the placement test?

When could I test out of the language? Also, does it matter that I wouldn’t be getting college credit for my current language? I’m an IB student taking my language at the standard level, so scoring highly on my test wouldn’t award me credit anyways.

Yes, if you do well enough on the placement test, you can pass out of all 4 semesters.

Assuming you are a freshman, you will take a placement test at the beginning of the fall semester.

AP credit doesn’t matter, it’s all about how you do on the placement test.

^^ is that also true for math? i want to place into calc3.

yep, there’s a placement test for math as well.

no there isnt. You cant just place out of math credits.

EDIT: I’m wrong, apparently the math placement can’t go beyond 116. Bearcats is correct. Regardless, there still is a math placement test, you will just need AP credits to place into 116 or above.

the math placement test was used to determine if you need to take precalculus before you take calculus or something like that i remember

Yeah, the placement test is just to see if you need to take remedial courses before being able to attempt Calc I (115). Beyond that, math placement is up to you and your adviser. If you’re going straight to calc III, it would be helpful to have AP/IB/transfer credit for Calc I and Calc II to convince your advisor that you’re ready for Calc III and in case you’re doing something with Calc I and II as prerequisites.

I did what’s called “University in the High School” program at my NY high school. I have 4 semesters of Spanish from SUNY Albany. Will it transfer?

I did something similar. I think it depends, but I would first contact the program and ask if they have any experience with U of M and credits, and then contact Michigan and ask if they’ll accept the credits. Worst case scenario they make you take the placement exam, which you should do well on.

Is it weird for people to start at Calc II? I took BC class but am taking the AB test because I’m not very good at Calculus. Does pretty much everyone just start at Calc III or at there lots of people in Calc I and II classes.

I am afraid of these placement tests. EEK.
