Question about "formal" dress at Stanford

I'm an international student so I'm not too sure what "formal" dress means in the US. How often do events that require such a dress code happen? What kinds of events require formal dress? (frosh formal?)
And how formal is formal dress? Will prom-befitting dresses be too much?
And as a freshmen, how many dresses do you suggest I bring?

Thanks!

You will be out of place if you dress in traditional formal attire for frosh-formal. It’s not a semi-formal event either.

One thing you might want a prom-style dress is for the Vienesse Ball (basically a night in winter quarter where you go to a ballroom setup and waltz and do other social dances- I would definitely recommend it). For that, there’s a formal dress code.

That said I don’t really know how many dresses you should bring.

There might be 1 or 2 events max that would require Prom-style dresses in an entire year. Stanford likes being as informal as possible (for the most part).
