Apparently freshman can download a program and switch classes over the summer? I need to switch out of a seminar class into a literature class because it conflicts with a sports schedule. However, the only possible class I can switch into has “Department Permission” listed under it. What does this mean, and how can I switch into this class?

If you’ve already attended Orientation and have registered for your classes, you can now make changes through the Agora portal. (There’s no program to download.)

However, if you want to get into a class that’s restricted (such as one listed “with department permission only”), you would first have to contact the chair of that department and get permission before you can register for the class. If you can’t contact him or her now because they are away from campus, just wait and try to make the change during the first week of classes during the drop/add period. You should also have some alternate class choices in mind, in case you don’t get department permission (e.g., if you don’t have the necessary background or there’s already a wait list). Good luck!

yes, you need to download the software to run Course Reg from a non-BC computer. The Agora portal is just that, a portal which links to other BC servers. The course registration server is so-80’s and still runs in DOS, which requires a separate window (for which you need the sw). Follow the link on the upper left.

[U-View - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/offices/stserv/academic/students/uviewplus.html)

btw: if you are an athlete, have you checked with the academic advisor for your sport?

Sorry for the misinformation; bluebayou is right. I had forgotten that you would not be linked into the BC system yet.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know if U-view doesn’t work on your computer don’t freak out! Most laptops now a days are 64-bit and the program is so old that it won’t run on that. During school I had to register either on a friends computer or in the CTRC (computer lab) just because the program won’t run on my laptop.

And I wouldn’t worry about changing classes just yet. You will have ample time once you get to campus during the first two weeks of school, which are add-drop weeks.

Alright, thanks everyone! But what makes a class restricted over another? Is it a harder class?

nah, it’s restricted for everyone. For example, a department may wish to manage the WL internally, and not allow anyone sign up thru Agora. Thus, when a class is full, it becomes ‘Restricted’ forcing the WListees to grovel via the Dept office.

Oh okay good! I was worried about being super hard because I just want to fulfill my lit requirement. Thanks.

What is the course called? Only certain classes count for literature core, you cannot take an upper division English elective for core credit, and I doubt a core class would be department restricted. The number for the class should be below 100. Either way, if you post the name of the class I may be able to give you some more insight into it.

I believe its called Literature and Society. The number is below 100 (it says its a core english class?)
