Question about GC Rec

Hi everyone!

So, some of the colleges I am applying to require a guidance counselor recommendation. I only want to send my guidance counselor's recommendation to those schools; none of the others. (I don't know my guidance counselor that well, really, so it's worthless to send it to schools that don't require it.)

I've been on the Common App and know that I can "assign" teacher-recommenders to certain schools; can I do the same with my guidance counselor? I don't see an option for that.

Thanks!

If you are submitting the Common App, there is no choice. The school report includes the Guidance Counselor recommendation. Your only option is: If the school has their own form, then you have to use that one.

BTW: A lot of the School Report questions is stuff the GC can figure out from your transcript (how you compare to other students at the school). The report also says:

“While this evaluation is a required part of every School Report, we recognize that some school counselors face formidable challenges. If your professional circumstances render you unable to provide substantive written comments about this student, and if you are unable to substitute another school official’s statement in its place, please help our member colleges better understand your situation by checking one or both of the statements below:
I do not have sufficient personal knowledge of this student.
The demands of my counseling load do not afford me sufficient time.”

Now, if you think your GC doesn’t like you, then that is a different issue.

Do you mean you want to only send the GC rec to the school’s that need it? Because if that’s the case, as far as I’m aware, the majority need a GC rec. The GC doesn’t just write a recommendation, they fill out evaluations, send in your transcripts etc.

In the case that your GC isn’t fit to write the rec, as OperaDad mentioned they can attach somebody’s elses rec but the GC is the one that makes that decision.
