I will be attending Mt Holyoke college this fall. I am interested in the German minor. I really love the language. However I am only in a lower level german class in High School and while I have some natural ability, haven't really tried to really learn it- not because I do not love it but because I put my other classes into a higher priority. With all the MHC language resources, I would really commit myself to studing the language. Major would be English with a focus in journalism.

How much experience do you need with a language prior to studying it as a minor? Thank you!

You don’t need any prior experience to minor (or major) in a language in college. However, the lower you start the more classes you probably have to take to complete the minor. At my own college the requirements for a language minor are typically stated as “five courses beyond the intermediate level.” That would mean five courses for a student who tests out of the 2nd year language sequence, or nine courses for a student who starts the language from scratch.

You can find the requirements for Mount Holyoke’s German minor on their website.

My D will be joining you at MHC this fall. She’s interested in other majors, though, but she is currently hoping to take German to meet the MHC language requirement.

Go to MHC’s ISIS and check the course catalog for the requirements for the German minor. It’s all there. No need to question people here on CC. Also, during Orientation, you will have to take a placement test if you are continuing a language that you studied in high school (as you will be). Your results on that test will determine which class you start with.

Now, start thinking about where you want to spend a junior semester or year abroad ! (Presumably in (or near) a German speaking country – great beer, great food )
