Question about GPA/Courseload

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this question has been asked a lot.

I was trying to calculate my UC GPA and I realized that even after I take way the non-uc approved honors/ap classes, I have still taken 14 semesters of uc approved ones my sophomore and junior years. I understand they only count an 8 point bump so 6 semesters of my uc approved honors/ap courses are disregarded in the calculation of my gpa. However, I was wondering if the UC's still factor my courseload into the decision process, and if so how heavily does it impact my chances. I just find it a little absurd that 6 semesters of honors classes are already disregarded, and then they further ignore another 6 of my uc approved ones. I would really like to get into a great UC school, but now I'm so worried my uc gpa will completely destroy my chances.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on the UC. Cal and UCLA practice holistic admissions and will evaluate the rigor of your coursework, both in total classes and in honors/AP difficulty level.

Some of the other UCs put points in their admissions formula to reward those who take more than the required minimum of a-g courses.

Examples - UCD gives 50 points for each a-g class above 35 taken and planned for senior year, up to a maximum of 20 extra (55 total a-g). That credit is the equivalent in the admissions score of a 1.0 different in GPA. that is, a student with a 3.0 and 55 a-g courses has the same points as a student with a 4.0 but only 35 a-g courses. UCSC gives 200 points if you will have taken 40 or more a-g courses, arithmetically a .2 GPA boost. They also give 250 points if you have had nothing but A grades in all classes in one or more of the a-g categories, another .25 GPA uplift compared to someone who didn’t earn those points. UCSD grants 500 poitns for 40 or more a-g courses planned, effectively the same as a .5 boost in GPA.

Thus, your coursework rigor will be looked at, even if it is not factored into the UC GPA itself except as an uplift for the first 8 courses.

thank you so much for your reply

The 8 point max rule is applied for everyone, so it’s not like you are disadvantaged in some way.
