Question about GPA/Rank and Interview

hi [first post on cc!] hehe

ok, so different colleges have different ways of recalculating your gpa.

how does barnard do this? florida schools say they take the academic classes unweighted. do you think barnard does that too, or would they also consider some of the elective classes as well like some other colleges? (total unweighted gpa).

I have a 3.5 uw with my total unweighted gpa, and probably a little lower with just academic classes unweighted (3.3 uw/3.4 uw).

and also, i’m in the top 25% of my class and im worried about that number. will they also take into count a major upward trend and consider my great activities/great act score/great recs? Or would that probably not be enough to overshadow my gpa? =(

last but not least, is it better to have an interview on campus?
ps. I’d be applying early (fall 08)

thanks everyone :)

Sorry, I have no idea what formula Barnard uses to calculate your GPA. Nor can I (or anyone else on these boards) truly assess your chances for admissions.

I CAN, tell you that it seems (from reading the posts of many here and from experiences of those I know personally) that Barnard will, perhaps more than most top-tier schools, consider your "major upward trend" and your "great activities/great act score/great recs". In short, Barnard seems to do an exceptional job of looking beyond numbers to the person presented on their application.

It's up to you, therefore, to organize your app. so that you present yourself accurately. In other words, don't list EVERY single activity you ever did...just those that support and have helped to define who you are becoming/hope to become; or that show leadership or some other worthy characteristic. All you have indicated in your post are generalities, but that is okay. I would not want to tell you how to present your EC's or how to write your essays. Just keep in mind that these are the tools by which the adcom will best perceive your merrits and the things which may make you a great "fit" for Barnard.

Just do your very best work in school the rest of this year and stay focused over the summer.

Best to you!!!

thanks churchmusicmom!

that was very helpful. :)

Am I correct in assuming that you meant you'd be applying early (fall 09)?

I have a similar gpa to yours (3.6 total uw, a little lower with just academic classes). I applied regular decision for fall 08

I have a friend, accepted early decision whose gpa (total uw) was the same as yours, so you should be fine. And, to echo churchmusicmom, I'd say that the "total person" apparent in your application is more important than a single gpa number.

As far as the interview is concerned, my friend accepted ed did an on-campus interview. i know another girl, from Chicago, who did an alumni interview and is currently a sophomore at Barnard. Her roomate did not do an interview at all, and obviously was still accepted. So i don't know whether on-campus vs. off-campus vs. no interview at all really makes that much of a difference in the end.
