I went to NYU for my first two years of undergrad and transferred last fall to UCLA. UCLA doesn't include my grades from NYU in my GPA, thus, the GPA I graduate with will be based entirely on grades earned here. Will law schools abide by the same policy? Or will they combine my NYU and UCLA GPAs? I ask because my GPA at NYU was pretty high, and it would stink if it didn't count for anything...

unrelated, but… Wow, talk about a change of scenery lmao

yeah tell me about it! culture shock…

Are all your classes at NYU just listed as Transfer credits with no grade…?
Is there any particular reason that UCLA is not accepting your NYU grades, or is this their general policy involving transfers?

General policy. Why should grades count? If a kid got a 4.0 from a community college and transferred to UCLA, with his grades also transferring, he’d be gunning for valedictorian; that’s definitely unfair to students who earned their grades in a more competitive and difficult academic environment.

In general, transferring the grades would imply that the students who earned their grades from the other school can be compared to students who earned their grades at the transferred-to school, but they really can’t be compared.

The good news is that the NYU grades will still count, but in a different way: They won’t count in UCLA’s GPA, so they won’t count toward latin honors, being valedictorian, etc. You have to earn the grades at UCLA to qualify for those honors. But, when you apply for law school, grades earned from both NYU and UCLA will be combined into an overall GPA, and law schools overwhelmingly rely on that GPA (and not the school-specific GPA) in making their decisions.

yes, as flowerhead said, it’s their general policy for transfers. thanks for the feedback!

I haven’t seen a lot of college transfer policies, but I have yet to see one which will factor in another college’s grades into its own gpa. Where would you draw the line? Community college grades? University of Phoenix? University of Kaplan?

All of your grades will be considered for law school, from any and all schools.

Well, grades from every undergraduate institution attended, to be precise.
