Question about grade change

I was wondering, is it possible for a professor to change a grade a semester/year after the class was taken? And if so, do I have grounds to ask him?

So here's my story...

I unfortunately received a C as the final grade for a class that I had an A- in, due to missing 3 more classes than allowed (I personally think its BS to have such a steep penalty for absences but that's besides the point). I'll point out that participation was not at all necessary/part of our grade, even though I participated much more than everyone else, and the A- I "earned" put me in the top 3/25 in the class. Anyways, the reason I missed these classes is because I suffer from occasional sleep paralysis (where i'd be more or less awake but literally unable to move), which is a symptom of narcolepsy which I was recently diagnosed with, but have had for years. This has pretty much affected my previous performances in all my classes, but this specific class took a massive toll on my GPA. Obviously I cant "prove" that I missed the classes because of what I previously said, but is it worth a try? I think its pretty unfair that I worked my butt off to get an A- and be top 3 in the class but to have my grade drop to a lousy C because of circumstances "beyond" my control (I was not diagnosed or being treated for narcolepsy at the time, but after my recent diagnosis and current treatment, I am doing much better in classes this semester, 3 As and an A- going into finals week).

Honestly, I don’t think you have much of a case… if it was bad enough to physically prevent you from going to class a year ago, why didn’t you look into it then? I’m sure the attendance policy was well explained at the beginning of the class, and if the circumstances were out of your control, you should have talked to the professor then, not a year after getting the grade. Honestly, it sounds like you’re just looking for an excuse to boost your GPA.

What? No. The ONLY time a professor will ever change your course grade is if there was a clerical error (such as if you got a 92 on an exam, but it was somehow inputted as 29 instead. I’ve heard incidents like that have happened before, though rare), but those kinds of errors should’ve been caught before final grades were sent out. Plus, I don’t know about your school, but at mine, once grades are sent to the registrar’s office, the professor can’t do anything about the grades anymore.

This professor followed their attendance policy. Some do, some don’t. I would just move on and not worry about this too much.

But you can look to see if your has an appeal or grievance process and present your evidence. That is really the only recourse you have.
