During my high school career, I received 4 Bs in total. However, my GPA hovers at an A. (I received high 90s in other classes to make up for the Bs.)

Would colleges realize that my GPA makes up for those Bs? Or would the Bs have a negative impact at top schools?

Colleges will see your GPA and your grades, so if I understand your question correctly, your GPA will not mask the fact that you received four Bs. Getting four Bs doesn’t kill your chances of getting into a good school, however, it obviously puts you below the straight A students. What’s really important is the classes you got the Bs in. If you got Bs in electives (journalism, team sports etc.) it won’t be too much harm. However, if the Bs you got were in core classes (Math, Science, English etc.) or in the area in which you plan to major (i.e. you apply as an engineering student but have Bs in Alg 1, Geometryl Alg 2 and Calc) this will hurt your application.

I’m with Smithg: Your question is clear as mud.

If you had seven semesters of 6 classes each and had gotten all As, then you’d have a 4.0 Cumulative GPA for those 42 grades. If you got four Bs, then you’d have 38 As and 4 Bs = 3.90 Cumulative GPA.

Your GPA doesn’t “make up” for anything – it clearly displays your 4 Bs.

Are you asking is a 4.0 better than a 3.9? Isn’t it self evident? But as Smith says, it depends on what classes the Bs were achieved. But even then, if your course schedule was rigorous, a 3.9 doesn’t eliminate you.

Sorry, I should’ve phrased it better.
What I meant is that our school does GPAs out of 100, not 4.0
Solely looking at my GPA which is around 95-96 despite the 4 Bs, one might state that I have a higher GPA than those who have only gotten low As (92-93) in their classes. However, looking at the picture as a whole, I did get some Bs in English classes.
The question is if the GPA will put me in a better position because it may be higher than those with straight As on their report card. Let me know if it doesn’t make sense!

Many colleges will recalculate your GPA based on your transcript. Typically this involves converting your GPA to a 4.0 scale and applying “weight” to certain classes they deem worthy.
So the answer to your question is no. After the conversion process your GPA will be around a 3.8 (if my math was correct) whereas a straight A student will have a 4.0.
