Does anyone know anything about HOBY (Hugh O'brian Leadership Conference)? I'm going to be the school representive this year in May and I'm not completly sure what it is? What do you do there? Is it considered prestigious and good on a college app?
If you have any info please repy

Sorry if this is an innapropriate thread to post this on.

It's a very nice leadership program. There are some schools (not extremely highly rated ones) that give scholarships to students who were HOBY ambassadors (what HOBY participants are called).

My younger S was a HOBY ambassador, and loved it. Back then, he was shy, and very into community service. HOBY helped him come out of his shell including by helping him become more confident and less shy. There are a lot of silly appearing activities such as HOBY cheers and games that are done to help participants connect with each other and learn how to be more gregarious. While some participants are naturally very gregarious, some are not. If you would hate doing these cheers, etc., don't go.

All HOBY conferences include workshops on: community service, politics, and entrepreneurship as well as info about applying to college and getting college scholarships.

At the end of each HOBY conference, based on their participation, one male and one female ambassador are selected to go to the international HOBY gathering that's held in Washington, D.C. each summer. Half of your expenses are covered, and you're expected to come up with the rest. You also can completely pay your own way there, but that's not as prestigious as being the official HOBY ambassador from your region.

Students who've gone to HOBY international have told me it's an awesome experience, and they got to interact with students from all over the world.

All HOBY ambassadors can return as volunteers including as junior counselors and counselors. S has done this three times, and I also have volunteered. It's a nice organization that attracts good people who care about making a difference in the world. It's also fun.

I went as a HS Soph, have volunteered, and last year D1 went. Some of the people I have met through HOBY have been lifelong friends. I have met Hugh himself, and what dedication he has had to his life's work! I highly recommend it - HOBY alums automatically qualify for scholarships at some colleges...

BTW - I don't do that Peel Bananas cheer, or the Singing in the Rain one either, but the others are not so bad....

I like the Singing in the Rain cheer. :)

It was cool. I did it, and although I didn't really get much out of it (though you may, a lot of people really enjoy it and go back), I met a lot of really cool people that I stay in touch with.

HOBY is sooo much fun. OUTSTANDING, actually (you'll understand that after you go). I come from a very apathetic high school, and it was nice to go to a HOBY seminar and converse and spend time with like-minded students from my own state. Actually, I'm from RI and our seminar was so small we had other states lol. Most of the ambassadors are in the top of their class and participate in a lot of ECs. Different panelists come and speak, and their speeches correlate with workshops you have been attending. One of our speakers was an author from our state and gave us all copies of his book and then signed them. Another man worked with the NFL to recycle during the Super Bowl, and now he's tight with Tom Brady (lucky). There is a social and you room with other ambassadors, typically in a college (living in a dorm for a weekend was a total wake-up call for me!!) Anyways I want to wish you the best of luck with HOBY, and either post or message us to let us know how it goes!
