My dad's bugging me. I don't even know if I got in or not but since UIUC is the only school I'm applying to that I would have to actually live at ( I live in Chicago), he wants me to start looking at housing now, seems pretty arogant to me but he's my dad!

Anyways, I'm looking for a good sized single, quiet room. I'm looking at Private housing. I'm torn right now between Bromley and Armory House. Suites is like $3,000 more but the single rooms are supposed to be a good bit larger and it has its own internet service plus the rooms are soundproof (this is huge for me). Bromley, however, has stuff like a microwave/refrigerator built in plus a laundry facility (does Suites have this?) The biggest problem with Bromley though is that parking isn't a guarantee. It costs extra (same with suites) but it's done in a lottery. I need a parking space as I'll be driving back home every weekend (or most).

Between these, which one do you guys think is better? BTW, according to my parents, they don't mind paying the extra $3,000 if that is what I choose. I know it's early and this sounds pretty arrogant but help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

ok first off dude, no offense or anything but I really don't see why you would be want to drive back every weekend. secondly you can either a) get parking through U of I or b) get parking through the Champaign which means you could park in the street. If you get parking through U of I, you have to park in designated lots which might or might not be far away. If you get parking through champaign, you can park in the street but drunk people could vomit on your car. seconldy if costs are not a matter I woud pick bromley.
also why don't you want a roomate? you should really try to enjoy college as much as you can.

It's not really my decision. It's early but these are questions my parents wanted answered. As far as the family thing goes, it's a cultural thing.

wow, get yourself an ipass if you dont have one, that's gonna be a haul every week.

when i looked at bromely i had a bunch of people tell me it was mostly girls in that dorm. i'm a guy, so i looked elsewhere. I'd suggest seeing the single before you get it because i havn't seen a large single on this campus yet. I ended up in one and it's sooo small. I'm in graduate housing though since i'm 20, so you dont need to worry about getting stuck in one of these singles.

Lol Armory Suites. If memory serves me right, that is smack dab in the middle of the frats. You want a single, so I am assuming you are shy/anti-social; Armory Suites will be a great fit for you :)

I would go with Bromley. It has a decent location in comparison to the quad (where your classes will be! tell yourself all you want that distance won't be a problem, it will). As for the girl thing...wow. Who would not want a hall full of college girls? And to clarify, I've seen many guys walking outa there. Plus, Bromley has huge rooms and AC; you'll love the AC in the summer.

As for driving home, I highly doubt you will stick with this plan. That is a 2.5/3 hr drive, every weekend. You know you have classes right?

I actually want girls around, who said I didn't? I'm not anti-social or shy by any means, my parents just said that they would get me a single room so I agreed. Armory suites also has AC and bigger single rooms I believe. I would choose Bromley but that parking thing always comes back to me. Yes, I understand it is 2.5 hours, I'll probably only do it every other week but whatever.

Actually, my ex boyfriend used to live in FAR. And so i was there quite often.

It is the same as everywhere else. Filled with drunken idiots? Maybe. But so is the rest of U of I- and truly most other colleges- on weekends. The drunken idiots could be, and are, any and every race.

*** kinda bullcrap is that? You can't drive back every weekend.

Your dad is probably suffering from what my mom suffered from. It's real tough for parents to let go, but you gotta talk some sense into your dad, make him understand that you can't visit every weekend. You're gonna be too involved and crap. There's homework, *** you gonna waste your time and gas money?

Leave the car at home, you waste less money, if you wanna go home or dad tells you to, just take the bus. It'll cost less in the end..

Not many freshman have cars and there's no point, it's not like you can go to a lot of places and plus you'll be spending the first couple months adjusting, you'll be too busy to drive to many places.

I'm a freshman and the bus system is pretty good here. I thought I was gonna walk more than take the bus, but I take the bus a lot now. It's really a better alternative. Waste less money.

It's unrealistic to come home every weekend.

"whereever you want to stay, do NOT sign up for FAR. That's a very noisy place to be because that's where all the brothers are.

Also, every night you see a group of flat-faces gathering together to smoke and spit and hawking."

I live in FAR and I'm not black or asian, but I agree, there's a large amount of both ethnicities at FAR. FAR though is a decent place to live. They've got air conditioning, which was good b/c it was hot in Champaign until like late October. The food and dining is alright and it's better than in other dorms. It is far from the quad and other buildings, but there's buses, so it's not too bad.

I'm strugglin with it myself of whether to leave FAR next year to go to Illini Tower or just stay in FAR

I'm gonna bump this up. About the car thing, I love to drive. It's a stress reliever for me. I'm actually excited about driving for like a 100 miles going straight on one open road. About coming home every weekend, these will be weekends when I am free. But are there classes on the weekends? And whats this about homework? I can't do my homework at my parent's place. I drive home on friday night and come back Sunday evening. That's 5 hours at most.
