question about IGETC

I am very confused something about IGETC and GE requirement.
I plan to apply to UCLA aerospace engineering next year and did well on pre-req courses so I have time to think about the GE courses.
My counselor told me that I don’t need to take any GE to transfer. But since I have time and those courses are necessary to graduate, I think I should take it.
And then, I totally don’t understand that HASSEAS in UCLA states on the website completing some of GE is beneficial for transfer student but partial IGETC is not accepted. And some websites say IGETC is different for STEM major.
Can someone explain to me how IGETC works? Should I completing it even if I get over 70 transferable credit?

If you have time, don’t do IGETC. Way too many classes. Do gen ed breadth. So that’s 2 English comp (required), 1 quantitative math (which you’ve done) and usually four courses from two of these disciplines: physical/life sciences, social sciences, or arts/humanities. There could be some variation by UC college but that’s the general rule. And yes you can transfer without it completed. For details per UC, you need to go to each college and see what engineering wants in terms of GE.

Thank you @ohm888 very much. Honestly, I didn’t know about gen ed breadth, but what you mentioned is just what assist.org tell me but without the name. I will go to check the requirements and confirm with my counselor.
Also, my friend wants to apply to chemistry major in L&S in UCLA, to which TAP is helpful as I knew. Should she do IGETC? It seems she can do both TAP and IGETC at the same time. Thank you again.
I worry about IGETC because I saw many people said it’s very important to apply to UCLA.

IGETC is the most simple GE track imo and gave me a lot of flexibility, and made good use of my AP Scores. Coming in with 4 AP tests (16 units), I only had to take about 7 more classes for GEs, and that might be an overestimate as I took more classes than I needed to. But it’s not your only option!

@flaminhaute Thank you for explaining. I don’t have any AP Scores so it seems not to be a good option for me.

I sent an email to HASSEAS office and just got an answer. I just posted it because I think it may help other people.

You do not need to complete it, but if you complete the FULL IGETC, then you will get credit for all of the UCLA GE requirements. But if you only complete some of it, you will only get credit for the courses that your community college courses are equivalent to at UCLA. For example, taking Psychology at your college might satisfy the social science category for IGETC. But at UCLA, psychology is not a GE. So if you do not finish IGETC, then that psychology course will not fulfill any requirement here.
If you want to finish it, then finish it. But you need to prioritize completing the major prep. Finishing IGETC will not give you any advantage for admission. Too many students prioritize finishing IGETC and they don’t complete the major prep, which we consider to be the most important thing.
If you do not finish the full IGETC, you will just have to finish GEs at UCLA. There are only 5 of them, so it’s not a big deal if you don’t have them done. You just need one GE to be eligible for admission.

Just 1 GE!
