Question about International Relations

I'm an incoming GSP freshman, and GSP students can't declare a major until they leave the program. I'm planning on transferring from GSP to CAS 2nd semester soph year.

I just saw this message on the NYU IR site:

"As the program is demanding, the number of students who can be admitted is limited to 25 to 30 per year. Therefore, interested students need to submit a formal application, by October 15 of their sophomore year."

So do I submit the application while still in GSP, or do I have to wait until I switch to CAS? Because if I wait to submit it when I'm in CAS, I'm worried it'll decrease my chances.
And what happens to the hundreds of kids who don't get accepted? Only 25-30 is so little...do they have to pick a different major?

I would really appreciate some advice :)

bump! anyone...please?

When I asked my counselor, she said the number was larger than that... but not by much (around 50), I thought as long as you meet the requirements, you'd be fine (3.65 GPA, etc.)

thank you so much! my friend is an IR major and she said that like tons of kids apply and it's so hard...and then I read the NYU website that said only 25-30 get accepted and I freaked out. But thanks so much

Hi molly,

I'm currently a senior in CAS (started in GSP) majoring in international relations. Getting into IR is definitely doable for GSP students but much more difficult than for normal CAS students because of the limited classes you can take freshman year. You should apply to IR while you're still in GSP as soon as you complete the two core classes. Whether you get into IR or not is determined by you GPA (should be around 3.7) and the grades you got in the core classes. I cannot stress enough that you should take the core classes as soon as possible, preferably in your freshman year instead of the non-western civilization class and the science class. If you choose not too, then make sure you take both International Politics and Econ 1 or 2 first semester sophomore year, otherwise you will not be getting the major.

When I started at NYU it seemed like everyone was bent on doing IR. Of those most didn't even apply, mostly because they didn't meet the GPA requirement or their interests changed. Of those that did apply (and met the requirements) most got in, except those that did badly in the core classes. If you don't get in you will be completely fine, IR doesn't have it's own classes until senior year and you can do an honors major in politics and minor in econ which is exactly what IR is.

Good luck, and enjoy NYU!! (freshman year is the best!)

Also, I should add that applying by Oct 15 of your sophomore year is not mandatory and you can apply second semester of your sophomore year and still get in. When you get to campus visit Emily Mitchell-Marell at the politics dept. and confirm this.

thank you so much, vsm, for all the helpful info on the IR major, I really appreciate the advice. I've already picked my classes for 1st semester though - WTE, Social Foundations I, Cultural Foundations 1 (all required) and my one elective is Life Science. There weren't really a ton of options, but I am planning on taking international politics as soon as I can. thanks!
