Question about language requirement.

Hey everyone, I've got a question regarding the UIUC language requirement. I'm hoping to transfer to UIUC after getting my associates at my CC, and I'm a bit confused about the language requirement. My understanding is that the entire college has a 3 semester language requirement, but the College of LAS has a 4 semester language requirement. Is this correct?

I'm planning on taking the first year of either french or spanish here at my CC, so I'll only have a year left after transfer. When I look at the French courses in the UIUC course catalog, it shows FR 104, which is a 4th semester course, as satisfying the LAS language requirement. When I look at the Spanish courses though, it says that SPAN 103, a 3rd semester course, satisfies the LAS language requirement.

Is this correct? Would I be able to satisfy the language requirement for the LAS with only 3 semesters of spanish, rather than 4 semesters of french? From what I'm seeing on the course catalog, the introductory Spanish 101 and 102 classes aren't offered anymore, and there is no Spanish 104. Is SPAN 103 a more comprehensive course that covers 2 semesters worth of material in one semester or something?

I'm a physics major by the way, so I'd have to adhere to the LAS requirements.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Bump. Anyone got any insight into this?

You are misreading the course catalog. It says for Spanish 103: “Followed by SPAN 141 or SPAN 142, this course fulfills the Liberal Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement.” In other words, you need to take either SPAN 141 or 142 after taking SPAN 103 to fulfill the LAS requirement.

Ahh…I see that now. I don’t know how I didn’t catch that.

Thanks for the clarification.
