A little bit of a silly question here, but should I bring a lot of quarters onto campus for the laundry/dryer machines? Or is there some sort of "credit" on our student ID cards and we pay before or later? Can someone fill me in on what the laundry scene is like? Thanks

i think i heard something about how there's money on your id card (it's included in your room rate) unless you live in off-campus housing?

i heard its free.

On campus, you are charged a flat fee at the beginning of the semester, and you get unlimited use of the washers/dryers. For off campus housing, the system varies; check the housing page on your particular building. Many use separate cards that you add value to with bills.

All on-campus dorms except Morewood E have eSuds, which allows you to check for availability of machines over the Internet, as well as have the machines email you when they're done.

If you live in Morewood E, laundry is completely free. No flat fee or pay-per-use.

I didn't mention it before, but I will be dorming in New House, so can I still assume that I will not have to worry about bringing quarters, etc. onto campus to pay for laundry? Also, is there some level of security in the laundry room--will laundry machines & dryers only open with the swipe of my student ID card? Thanks

If you live in New House, you don't have to worry about bringing quarters. I am pretty sure that anyone living in CMU sponsored housing has access to washing/drying that they have already paid for. These machines will not start unless you have your ID card. After you load up your clothers you have to swipe your card to start the machines. I think you can use your card to start as many as you want but I am not positive. I have used mine to run 4 washing machines at 1 time.

Off campus apartments through CMU still require you to pay for laundry.

In E-Tower, you don't have to swipe your card, and the washers/dryers don't have eSuds. You just use them like you would use them at home.

I do not think there is any "security" built into the machines; your ID starts them but does not lock them.

Ahh. Thanks for all the helpful advice & information so far. By the way, how often on average do you find yourselves doing your laundry at CMU? Once a week or once every week and a half?

How often you do laundry depends on things like how many times you wear jeans before washing them, how much you like clean sheets, and how picky you are about what you wash together. The washing machines are side loading, so they look small, but there's no agitator so they hold much more than one might think they do. I've washed my comforter in them before.

Is it bad that I don't think I will be washing my jeans or khaki pants while at CMU? My parents (who own a dry cleaner) just told me to bring them home so they can wash them well. I don't really expect to get them dirty, so I can wear them multiple times before I'd have to wash them. Shirts, however, I wash after I wear once. I don't think I'm very picky when it comes to washing certain clothing with other clothing (as long as it's colors with colors, whites with whites, and socks/towels/boxers together). I guess there isn't really a downside to using the washers as many times as necessary, since New House laundry machines & dryers are already paid for.

You do have to buy detergent and dryer sheets (highly recommended, since maybe they'll reduce static and when it gets dry in the winter, everything is staticy). I wouldn't suggest going a whole semester without washing your jeans and khakis, unless you have an impressively large wardrobe that probably won't quite fit in your dorm room.
