Hey all,

I posted this in the Grad school section, but there may not be much activity there. The parents here on CC seem to know a lot and answer pretty quickly, so I thought I'd post here.

I have questions about how LORs are handled for grad schools.

(1) Some schools ask for LORs to be included WITH the apps...how is that done? Do profs send their LORs to the student and then the student uploads them with that app?? Can the LOR be an email?

(2) Some schools send the profs a notification to request an LOR, so I guess I just provide those schools contact info...right?

(3) Do some schools just want you to give your profs their school addresses and the profs send the LORs directly to the school?

(4) I'm applying to about 10 or so grad schools, so is this going to require each prof to do a lot of work?

(5) I've talked to a few profs who've said that they will write my LORs....should I give them a copy of my resume for them to refer to?

As with any request for a recommendation, you should provide your rec writer with a letter with your background, goals for grad school and highlights of your time with that professor, and outlining your strengths and so on and also providing a resume.

Then, get the recommendation procedures for each of your grad schools. Some grad schools have professors send them online and some by snail mail. It differs between schools. Make a master list of submission procedures for recs per grad school on your list, along with due dates, and give this in your “packet” to each rec writer, as well.

Typically a rec writer might write one rec and submit the same one to all ten of your grad schools.

The student doesn’t upload the recs. For schools that do recs online, there are directions of how the professor is to submit it him/herself. If a school does it in snail mail, they provide an address of where professors send these in directly. Typically the recs are never in the applicant’s own hands.

I also wondered about this process because I saw where a school said all requested info must be uploaded together. I guess the school doesn’t mean the LORs???

Nowadays, more often than not, I upload my rec letters to an online system (either to a centralized system or one that is particular to the school). I use the same letter for each school. The student has already uploaded their material to their file online, and they register me as a letter writer, and the system then sends me an email notification prompting me where to go.

I personally do not find resumes very useful. But I do find it useful to have details about the student that pertain to the kinds of criteria relevant to the grad school. If students look over what the institution is asking of me, and then provides me with detailed but factual evidence of those factors, it makes my task somewhat easier.
