if i were to order a package (a laptop for example) while in college, where would they ship it? what address do i put down? can they even ship to cmu?

Yep, each person has their own SMC code. It's sort of like a P.O. box. You have your own mailbox. If the package cannot fit in the mailbox (i.e. a laptop); the mailroom will send you an email that a package has arrived and you just go down to the mail office and pick it up. It's pretty efficient.

Sometimes it can get really crazy, though. At the beginning of the year last year they didn't have long enough hours or enough people working (I don't know why, seeing that there was probably a similar demand the year before...) and the lines for picking up packages were 20-30 minutes. They got it sorted out after a month or so, though. Occasionally letters still take way too long to arrive...

Also mail seems to get misplaced into other people's mailboxes a lot...

At least the packages are hard to misplace.

I've never heard anyone complain about misplaced mail...

and it's never happened to me.

I think

I had a letter take over 2 weeks to reach me, and I've gotten someone else's mail once or twice.

A friend of mine received mail at the library (she works there) for one of her TAs.
