question about major choice?

is your designated major as important as your stats and ec's, for top tier colleges?
like how would my application change to them if i put chem instead of chem engineering? or biochem instead of bioengineering?
also is it better if your rec's come from a teacher who teaches subject related to your designated major?
im unsure which major to pick, but dont wanna put undeclared cuz that will make me look kinda "confused"
can someone gimme some advice plz?

It depends how competitive the program you are applying to is. Harvard, for example, only accepts 4% of students for more competitive programs, while others are as high as 14-15%.

The areas you are interested in are fairly similar, so the acceptance rates probably won’t be very different. Just look into the more competitive programs.

You could declare undeclared, and in some instances, this may help you enter a top-tier university, but you’ll have the lowest priority on class picking and eventually, choosing a major. One place I would not do this at is Harvard- they want you out in 4 years, 4.5 most, no exceptions, and being undeclared could extend your time there. Brown, though, allows you to change your major as much as you want, so it could be to your benefit to be undeclared.
