I'm looking at the UW application right now, and it has a list of majors, some with * next to it, and some with ** next to it. It says * majors generally admit all applicants, but for the ** majors, there are competitive admission standards and requires college-level course work before you apply. Does this mean I can't apply for a ** major as an incoming freshman?

When you apply, it pretty much just makes you pick the top couple majors that you’re thinking about. You can’t actually “pick” one when you first apply and are going into the school as a freshman.

Yeah, you don’t officially declare until 105 credits, I think. That, or when you become a junior. I’m leaning toward the 105 though, because I’m a junior and I still haven’t officially declared (I’m applying for my major for winter quarter.)

Anyway, either way, those course requirements are not necessary when you put your intended major as a Freshman. You just need to complete them before you officially declare your major.

They tell you to declare right after 90 credits, but it’s mostly a guideline so that people don’t already hit the end of their senior year and not have a major yet.

Also, some ** majors have direct admit, which means that as an incoming freshman, you’ll have a ‘chance’ at getting admitted to the major without finishing all prereqs.
