So, I am a junior in high school right now and I am very interested in getting into the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin and had a few questions regarding that and how likely I would be to get in. I go to a small private school with about 100 kids in a grade, so we do not have a rank as such, though the school notifies the university if a student is in the top 7%. I don’t know if I would qualify yet, but chances are I may not just because of how small the class size is (though my grades are quite good regardless). So, otherwise I would apply to UT as an unranked instate student. One of the major questions I had was about the math classes I have taken during high school. So, I’ve taken Algebra I freshman year, Geometry that summer, Alg 2 sophomore year, Pre cal junior year, and will take AP AB Calc senior year. I kind of regret taking the less advanced math route in my school- as if I had taken the most advanced one I would end up in BC Calc senior year. It’s too late to do anything now but I was wondering if my application would severely be looked down upon because of me taking AB instead of BC? I have around a 2150 SAT score (aiming for higher- only taken it once). I am going to try to get a very high score on the Math 2 subject test too to show colleges that I am good at math. Other than math, I have taken the most rigorous classes possible probably, and have quite a few leadership positions and involved in good clubs. My GPA is pretty high for my tough school as well. Thoughts? How do my chances look?
I think as long as all your application is strong otherwise, you’ll be fine. I’m a senior, was not auto-admit, I didn’t even take Calculus, I took Statistics as well as two non-AP core classes this year and got into McCombs 3 weeks ago!
My dd was instate non auto admit from a
Small very competitive school. Had same SAT score, 33 ACT and took calc AB. Only reason she did that was because of the teacher that was teaching BC. She was admitted to McCombs. I would highly recommend you also take the ACT test as well as the SAT. Their holistic formulas are a little different between the two tests and you could fair better with an ACT score. Also if your school doesn’t rank they will use your GPa and the average GPA of your school to come up with a rank estimate to use in the formulas.
I was top 7.33% but my SAT wasn’t super high and I got in. I had a very strong application as I had a ton of ECs, leadership, awards, and my letters of rec were amazing. I have taken 6 AP classes as well as some dual credit classes. Mainly if your application is strong you should be fine.
