Question About Mechanical Engineering

I recently got accepted to UCB as a ME major. I intended to major in aerospace engineering, but in the application process I found out that UCB did not have an aerospace program, which was upsetting. However, Berkeley is my dream school and I would not mind going there for ME if it means I can still have a future in AE since the two are very closely linked. Any suggestions? Should I go to UCB for my undergrad, leave after having a B.S. in ME, then go somewhere else to get a degree in AE? I really have no idea how I would go about doing this :/

Try to do a simultaneous degree in Physics or Astrophysics. That way you will get your aeronautics and your engineering

To be frank its better NOT to specialize as an undergrad. The all-encompassing ME would serve you much better IMO.

^ Really? that’s something that my physics teacher mentioned. So would it be possible to do an undergrad in ME and go to graduate school for AE?

Sounds like a good plan. Keep your grades up though!

Ok, the fact that I now have a rough plan of what I want to do, Berkeley is definitely about a 95% certainty for me.

^^ What kind of grades would I need to be a competitive student to get into a good aerospace grad school?

BTW, I know the ME program at Berkeley is great, but that’s pretty much all I know about it. Any tidbits (or bigbits) about the ME program that anyone would like to share to give me an idea about it?

ME is awesome, but its a lot of hard work, so get ready for a wild ride. In the UC system, probably UCLA has the best Aerospace programs. If you are planning on going there for grad school, then all you need to do is to graduate from Cal with at least 2.6ish GPA and u can get into UCLA for grad. But if you are aiming for CalTech or MIT, then I say get your GPA above 3.7 or 3.8. Try get Honors if you can. But as a Cal student, it shouldn’t be that hard to get into a good grad school.

Bump… How competitive do students tend to be in the ME department? Is ME one of the majors that is super competitive and cut-throat? I’m ready for hard work, but knowing that I won’t be alone and have peers willing to not step all over me would be a bit comforting…

Also, all I’ve been reading about in other threads is the “Berkeley Engineering Trap.” I don’t want to be the person stuck in engineering and hating it. I’ve done some research, looked at the ME classes, the syllabuses, the midterms, etc. and it seems like stuff I would thrive in, although I can’t be certain as the closest classes I’ve taken to things like “fluid mechanics” are physics, calculus, and my principles of engineering robotics classes. Anyone have and helpful advice in this matter?

hey, i hope this hasnt been posted before, i looked a little but couldnt fnd one:
does anyone know a sample mecheng 4-year schedule at berkeley?

and you absolutely have to graduate in 4 years, right? so a double major is v. unlikely?

all that is fine with me(onle being able to single major/grduate in 4years), i just want to know. sorry if i didnt look hard enough… =/

also, i know engineering at ucb is hardcore, and im scheduled for $2000 work work-study every semester… am i going to die?

can one get a job with just an ME degree? thats what Im aiming for?

^^ I don’t see why not. There is a myriad of jobs out there for people with ME degrees. If you’re wondering about getting a job with just a 4-year bachelor’s degree, I think it’s very likely to get a good one. Although I’m just assuming, someone correct me if I’m wrong…

The first thing you should know about engineering is that it requires a lot of teamwork. That’s what you learn from E10. In general, most engineers understand that we’re all on the same boat and that boat is sinking if we don’t all work together. Even though ME is probably one of the most populated majors in the engineering school (I think there are about 600 ME undergrads in total currently), they are not going to try and screw you over, especially since they might need you to help them on an upcoming group project.

As for whether or not you will like engineering…It’s really hard to say. My mother is an electrical engineer/computer science engineer and I thought her work as an engineer was really awesome and practical. Then I tried my hand at engineering and realized that I’m not that interested (nor am I as practical as I thought I was). It’s something you’ve got to try for yourself to really know.

You can petition to graduate in 4.5 years. A double major in another engineering field is possible. I know of a graduating Mechanical Engineering/Nuclear Engineering double major. Double majoring in something from L&S is more difficult because you have to do breadth too.

“also, i know engineering at ucb is hardcore, and im scheduled for $2000 work work-study every semester… am i going to die?”

There are too many variables for me to accurately gauge your chances. These variables include your math and science capabilities, your study habits, your social habits, and so on and so forth.

Yes, you can get a decent job straight out of college with just an ME degree.

I neglected to mention the Silver Space Laboratory, which has some AE projects is just on top of the hill behind Berkeley and there’s a bus that goes up there. It has a summer internship program which you might be interested in and some research opportunities.

what’s the word on the ME/NE joint major. I’m currently enrolled in NE but I want to apply for the ME/NE joint major. Does anybody know if you can only apply for the change during that specific deadline period in the Spring or will maintaining a 3.0 GPA allow you to switch? Also, how feasible is the ME/NE major?
