question about medical school application

DS is going to graduate at the end of May and then leaves on June 1st for an overseas internship/volunteering and won't return until late August. He is taking one year off after college, so he needs to apply to medical schools this June. He will probably have internet access in the summer. However, I would encourage him to get all the application stuff ready to go on June 1st right after the AMCAS opens.

My question is: what does exactly he need to submit to the AMCAS website besides the personal information, schools he intends to apply?Personal statement?

Thanks.

–transcripts from every school he has ever attended (including any co-enrollment from HS) sent to AMCAS

–letters of recommendations (or the committee letter if his school uses that) sent to the letter clearinghouse. Schools generally require 3 or 4. Some schools have special requirements for LORs so he needs to check on that

–MCAT score

–list of ECs (so he can fill out this application)

–COMPLETE list of every college level class (including any hs co-enrollment classes) he’s ever taken with grades (so he can fill out the AMCAS application–if his transcript(s) and his self-reported courses/grades don’t match that can stop his application from being processed)

–personal statement (I’m not sure there’s a universal length for the PS or if different school have different expectations–that something he’ll need to check)

Your son really needs to have reliable internet access once he turns in his AMCAS application since schools will be sending him secondary applications to fill out. IIRC, some schools only allow you a very limited window (as little as 2 weeks in some cases) of time to complete the secondary once the primary application has been received & processed and the link to the secondary is sent. His application won’t even be considered unless the secondary app is completed. If he doesn’t complete the secondary app within the deadlines he’ll be considered to have withdrawn from the application process for that school.

You might set up something with him so that you can print and mail secondaries to the schools that require them mailed rather than uploaded. Be sure to print some photos, too, as I think 8-10 schools to which my DD received secondary invites wanted a mailed photo.

My DD was out of the country, too, she handled all details online except mailing, in those cases she emailed me files to print and mail on her behalf
