OK so I was accepted into NYU ED, and they technically met all my need, but 11k is in loans and 4k is in workstudy, so if I was awarded the prize, would the scholarship make it so I would have the 11k in loans and would have to do the work study? Also, do they hand you a check, or how exactly does it work? Cause I was hoping it would also pay for a laptop, since I dont have one, and possibly a TV. Would I have to like, request the item and have it approved, or what?

Congrats on getting into NYU! The Gates Millennium Scholarship would cover your 11k in loans and 4k in work study. Their goal is for you to study hard and not have to spend your time earning money to pay tuition. The payment method is by check, but it's now sent directly to your university prior to each semester or quarter, depending on your university's system. If you work with your school's financial aid office (see if there is someone specifically in charge of GMS revisions), you can add a laptop by submitting additional expenses. https://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/appeal-form-ru.html. You can only request additional funding for education-related expenses so you could get a laptop, but you wouldn't be able to get a TV. If you end up getting the GMS and attend NYU, there are a number of GMS Scholars I know there who could help you out with your revision requests for additional funding. Good luck!

that was amazing. Are you affiliated with the school in any way? Just cause you were so well versed in the subject. Is there a list of approved items I can add under additional expenses? Also, sorry for the plethora of questions, but do tehy choose the laptop for us, or do we get to pick our own?

No, I'm not affiliated with the school, but I have gone through and am still going through these steps as a GMS Scholar. Always happy to share tips. There isn't a set list of approved items, but through revision requests you're able to fund some pretty neat opportunities. GMS covers funding for study abroad programs during the academic year (excluding summer term), so it's a great thing to take advantage of. As for the laptop, you can absolutely choose your laptop; however, some schools do have a funding limit on how much they will increase your budget for laptops so you'd have to find one that does not exceed that limit (if there is one). For example, the University of Washington allows up to $2,200 for a laptop. These are budget estimates though so you might find a laptop that costs more or less than the limit. When you actually go through the revision process, they'll ask for documentation to show the costs of the laptop. Hope that makes sense.

great! Also, if you dont mind, would you please share your stats, just to see if I have a chance at all of getting in =]
