Question about Murray Scholarship?

We visited W&M this past Saturday ... what a beautiful campus. The self-guided tour was more than adequate, and we were able to chat with a few students on campus to get many of our questions answered. Everyone was SO helpful.

My daughter is in the top 1% of her class, a NMSF with 4.0 u/w, ACT 35, and SAT 1550 (CR+M) and based on our visit to campus will definitely be applying to W&M.

We were reading online about the Murray Scholarship, which we understand to be highly competitive. We are curious to know approximately how many Murray Scholars are typically named each year?

As a public institution, we understand that the merit based opportunities are not quite the same as some of the other privates, but we're very interested in W&M and are curious about how the Monroe and Murray scholarships work for OOS applicants.

Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

approximately four (4… not a typo) Murray Scholars are named each year. You can read about the program here: [William & Mary -*Murray Scholars Program](http://www.wm.edu/as/murrayscholars/) and see profiles of the fortunate students by clicking one of the links on the left side of the page. Your D has numbers that are in the Murray ballpark, so I expect she would receive consideration.

Monroe is $3000 in research money, no tuition assistance. If I had to bet money, I would bet your D would be offered a Monroe Scholar. Monroe designation is offered to roughly the top 5% of incoming students, and there is the option to apply for 40-50 more slots while you are a freshman.

I am glad you enjoyed your visit and the W&M students you had the chance to met were nice. I think that is representative of the W&M student body as a whole. The campus really is one of the nicest in the country (could use some drainage work though, lol).

SG315 … thanks so much for the reply, we had already seen the online link that you provided, but did not know if they were just publishing a “representative set” of candidates. As your reply indicates, the numbers (4) on the website are consistent with your answer. I was also able to find another post last night indicating that the number was 4 but that there was also a desire or goal to increase that number to 10 or 11 “eventually.” Thanks again for the reply. My D is applying and we’ll just see how the chips fall. :-)

Also glad to hear you enjoyed your visit this past weekend.

All students who apply to W&M are considered for all merit-based scholarships we offer including the Murray and Monroe Scholarships and soccerguy’s numbers are spot on (4 Murrays a year and approximately 5% of admits offered Monroe). So your daughter will autmoatically be considered for those scholarships and she certainly sounds like she has some strong academic credentials. We do consider additional factors for both scholarships and due to the limited number of scholarships, not all students with great stats are offered the scholarships. There is a desire to increase the number of Murrays but that is not likely to happen in the next few years.

WMA … Thank you for the reply. These forums are a GREAT source of information as we navigate through this daunting process. This is our first time … I anticipate a much different experience for my son in 3 years having been through it already, right? You should feel very proud of your institution. Obviously it is beautiful, that goes without saying, but we were so impressed by all the people that noticed us walking around with the self-guided tour packet … probably looking lost at times … and being so willing to stop and ask us if we had any questions that they could answer. Really, at the end it was as if we’d taken the fully sponsored tour and attended the info session. Very much worth the trip. We didn’t expect to get too much since we were exploring on our own, so it’s great to have gone in with one set of expectations and have them completely met and exceeded in every way. Thanks again … she’ll be finishing her App soon.

Glad you got to experience the campus in such a wonderful way. Your sentiments are expressed by many of our prospective students. They find the W&M community to be exceptionally welcoming and friendly and I’m glad you discovered that for yourself last weekend.

Please feel free to post any additional questions.
