Question About Music Industry Major/Colleges

I'm currently a freshman at the University of New Haven in Connecticut (about an hour north from NYC). I'm thinking about transferring, possibly at the end of the year. I'm 95% percent sure about having a job in the music industry on the business side of things. I just don't know exactly how important experience versus a degree is. I feel like being a small college far away from the city is a disadvantage when I'm used to being 20 mins away from philly where I've accomplished and learned a good amount about the industry. Is it that different majoring in business and minoring in music than having a music industry degree? I almost went to Howard and just majored in music, but I figured the classes would be more specific here. The school I go to is okay but its just really far away and I have to come back almost every weekend to DJ and I like being around my friends at home better than at college. I'd rather be a college closer to home that is more lively and more people. I'm would like some opinions and suggestions of other colleges with music industry programs somewhat close to Philly. Thanks guys sorry for the long read.

JKinneyT, some earlier threads with school suggestions. These may or may not work for you.

One of these also contains additional thread links.

Thanks man

Drexel and its co-op program!

Some Schools south of Conn that have music business programs: Hofstra University, CUNY Baruch, Drexel, Grove City College, Manhattanville

OK. Drexel is good but extremely expensive. They also only take a small number of applicants each year. Does anyone know of any good state schools on the East coast that offer a degree in Music Business/Industry?? We are in the NJ/NY/PA area…

glendale, don’t know if you perused the links I posted earlier within this thread, or if this link [AES Education Directory by Geographic Area](AES Education Directory by Geographic Area) originally posted by edad was included within the referenced posts.

There’s a few state schools within the east on the aes list, but I can’t speak to the qualities or parameters of the programs. For reference, the aes compilation is comprised more of acoustic, technically focused programs, but there are a few programs (like Hartt’s for example) that offer both acoustic, recording technology, and more administration/business focused options.

Music industry, music business, music technology seem to be fairly interchangeable, but the program focus can vary widely.

I can’t vouch for its quality or reputation, but SUNY-Oneonta has one of the largest Music Industry majors, I think the head of the Music School said something like 600 students.

But that would be even more into the boondies than New Haven.

Violadad, you have been a great source. Thanks so much. Isn’t the AES site you mentioned just for audio engineering? It doesn’t include music business programs does it?

glendale, thanks. It’s largely for the audio engineering/recording production type of program given the nature of the source, but a number of the schools listed (particularly particularly those schools known for the strength of their music programs) Ithaca, UHartford/Hartt, U Miami just to name a few in the eastern region may have a number of program options and focus.

“Music business/industry” as you specified it may have a different connotation for different posters. Or at different schools. Are you looking for a program about

the business of music: music management…marketing, artist representation, music arts management & promotion,

music technology…the technical aspects of a recording, studio production

a science based more engineering focused type of audio/acoustics/design bent?

Some of these programs may offer all three. Some are BM’s with a focus on music, including theory, a bit of music history, and may have an audition based component, and others. Others may be BS programs, requiring strong science and math skills. UHartford/Hartt [The Hartt School | Music Dance Theatre > Undergraduate Programs/url has the BM in either Music Production & Technology or Music Management, a BA in Performing Arts Management, or a BS in Acoustical Engineering and Music. Many schools offer similar options.

It’s not an area of expertise or interest, so what I know is absorbed knowledge through a number of sources.

William Paterson University in North Jersey offers a BM in Music Management.

I am currently a undergrad student at a small school in Pennsylvania. I am a health science major and just recently had a change in heart. I would love to do something along the lines of working for a record label and dealing with the music business. I love music but i do not know how to play any instruments. I would like to work more along the lines of business. Also i am looking for a good school to go to in NYC that would help me make connections. Anyone have any advice? Or know if this is possible?
