I was recently admitted EA to Northeastern into undeclared/Explore program with a $14,000 Dean’s Scholarship. I am also a National Merit Semi Finalist and will hopefully end up being selected a National Merit Finalist. According to Northeastern’s website:“Students who are admitted to Northeastern and are recognized as National Merit Finalists* or National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars** will receive up to a $30,000 merit-based award, and may also be eligible for financial aid.
Northeastern National Scholarships replace any Dean’s, Excellence, Connections, or International Scholars awards and may result in a change to previously awarded Northeastern University Grant funds.”
Based on this information, I was wondering: Do most NMFs receive $30,000 or will I most likely receive a lesser amount?
If you have any other thoughts or personal experience on the NMF process at Northeastern, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Basically you notify Northeastern that you are an NMF finalist and that Northeastern is your first choice.
@Katze2964 Be sure to list Northeastern as your 1st choice with NM. NM will begin transmitting student info to 1st choices on March 1. If you are undecided, leave it as undecided until you are sure but no later than 5/31. This info is on their website so make sure to keep on top of this so you don’t miss out on your NM $. Congratulations and good luck!!
I am an NHRP scholar, which means I am subject to the same scholarship award as an NMF according to Northeastern guidelines.
I received 15k a year. I have a 33 superscore, a 4.2 weighted, and a 3.7 unweighted.
^^ purely anecdotal, but I obviously did not receive as much as I expected.
@marijke You are a senior right? I am pretty sure they will replace the initial merit they gave you (15K) with the 30K NHRP scholarship once you have the final paperwork in and have selected Northeastern as your first choice. I would call and confirm.
I am also a NHRP scholar, and I received 30k per year.
@suzyQ7 - yes I am. I did send them documentation, so I was a little confused on why I didn’t receive the full 30k, but ultimately it won’t impact my EFC so I’m not garnering to change it.
@suzyQ7 Are you fairly sure that becoming NMF this year will still mean the full $30,000 at NEU, as long as you sign contract and list first choice? A little worried because merit allocation seems different this year. Also, getting ahead of myself, since NMF letters don’t come out for another month or so. My son and I are worn out over this!
I don’t know, but there is no reason to think otherwise. Call NEU and find out. Specifically ask what the amount is for NMS assuming you don’t qualify for FA. When you factor in FA, they usually reduce the merit to your EFC…
I did call, but the answer was a bit vague. I feel that there is general vagueness regarding NM. Thank you, @suzyQ7
The website says up to 30K for NMF and I think on this board last year some did not get the full 30K.
@Kiddie, I think that person last year got FA and it was reduced to the amount = to their EFC. I don’t think we’ve seen anyone on this site with less than 30K NMS that only qualified for the NMS merit (didn’t sign up for FA).
I was watching it carefully because we thought we would get NMS, but off by 1 point.
I THINK it works like this- assume all 3 families qualify for NMS and cost of attendance is 60K:
Family A: EFC = 60K (doesn’t qualify for FA). - 30K NMS = 30K cost of attendance
Family B: EFC = 25K. Gets 30K Grant and 5K NMS. Or 30K NMS and 5K FA. Same thing. Cost of attendance = 25K
Family C: EFC = 10K. Gets 30K Grant and 20K NMS. Cost of attendance = 10K.
I’ve heard they won’t give you loans as part of the grant FA if you are NMS with an EFC
@binky17 You should call again and not accept a vague response. It should be a simple question for them to answer: either all NMFs get a 30k scholarship or they don’t.
@Jpgranier If my son becomes a finalist, I will.
@TomSrOfBoston do you know how you’re supposed to notify NEU that you’re a finalist? Admissions, financial aid office? Through the common app or the NEU portal? Looking around the website and haven’t found anything yet. Plus, NEU never sent any information about their NM scholarship program to S directly.
@Katze2964 @binky17 or others, did you get any updates from NEU regarding the NMF scholarship? S sent copy of finalist letter in mid February. Haven’t heard anything since.
@4getit binky17 was notified. At this point call Northeastern
Hi @4getit first and foremost: did you indicate on the NM website that Northeastern is your college choice? If in fact it is, please go immediately to that site and do so right away. I believe NEU’s deadline is April 2, but it may be sooner.
If another school is his ultimate choice, he needs to actively choose that school on the NM site. I think most schools’ deadlines for doing so are March 31 or so. You must designate a school for the sponsorship on the NM website in order to get the $. Choosing one school cancels your option to apply those dollars at another school, so choose wisely. For instance, my son chose Northeastern over USC, both NM sponsor schools to which he was accepted.
Did your son establish his myneu portal account? That is where you will find his FA status page, then FA financial disclosure page (shopping sheet). That’s where we saw that they applied the NM 30k scholarship (and only there – no notification otherwise).
Please dm me if you have any questions.
Thanks for the quick responses @TomSrOfBoston and @binky17. Very good advice. Aware of the need to designate the school on NM site. MyNEU portal is probably the missing piece of the puzzle. I will also tell him to check the deadlines for the different schools.
I just contacted my nu financial counselor with these same concerns. He said that national merit doesn’t send out the final notification letters until April 7th so once they have the list of total nmf that have nu as their 1st choice, then they will begin giving out the final scholarships. He also said that as nmf, we might not all receive the full 30k because “the system has changed and it’s above my grade so I can’t say for sure”. He did tell me that I would definitely receive and increase from my intitial 20k dean scholar
