Question about Nat'l Merit and Achievement

Okay, so I got a 222 on the psat, and I'm an African American. Here's my question...at what point in the competition am I required to choose which award to apply for...

in other words...Am I a semifinalist for both the nat'l merit and achievement, but have to choose which one to apply for the finalist standing or can I apply as a finalist in both?

thanx in advance.

I think you can do both, that the Nat'l Achievement is a side addition for African Americans. don't know tho'. Guess we'll see in another 9 months:)

No you pick one and then you have honorary standing in the other. I would do merit if I were you.

When though???? when do I pick one?...

Can I be a finalist for both competitions?

Can I be an actual scholar for both competitions?

I don't know what state you are from, but believe it or not, 222 has not been high enough for NMSF in a select few states some years. Have you already been notified that your score qualifies you for both NM Achievement and NMSF? 222 would definitely be NM Commended and NMSF in all states, except potentially a couple.

Secondly, National Merit Corporation gives you a lot of information with your NMSF packet. Has your school given you that packet yet?

Thirdly, the NMC people are very helpful if you call them. They are blunt and matter-of-fact, but they will answer any questions you have. The phone numbers will be in the NMSF packet. Be sure to have pencil and paper ready when you call them to write down the answers you receive. If you don't feel they are clear with their answers, just stay on the phone and keep asking until you completely understand all the ramifications of your choices. Also jot down the name of the person you talk to.

I'm in Pa...so I'm pretty much a semi finalist, unless of course the cutoff goes up 8 points (214 last year).

you can apply to both but you can only accept one...at least thats what my school told me

So I could theoretically be both a National Merit Scholar AND a National Achievement Scholar...but then only get a monetary award from one? Is this correct?

you got it
