okay, mine’s in december…i took my first lesson recently…and i have a few questions.

how many hours do u have to complete at a driving school? or does it not matter? i know someone who learned how to drive on his own and didn’t bother to take lesscons at all.

are there SPECIFIC RULES that i have to know for the road test? i mean, for example, if i’m making a right/left turn, when i turn the steering wheel, can i cross my hands or is that forbidden (cuz my instructor kept telling me, “don’t cross ur hands”.)??? i hate those kinda trivial things. so, is the road test very basic? like, if i can DRIVE (doesn’t matter if i cross my hands or not when turning), then i can pass?

To get your permit in New Jersey, you have to get above a 80 on the written test (which is ridiculously easy) and then log a total of 6 hours with a driving instructor. Your friend is driving illegally because the driving people need to do something with the permit to validity it. Although I haven't taken the road test, I hear it is the easiest in the country because NJ is the only state that gives the test on a closed course. But yes, they will take note of all that trivial crap that you would never really need.

he did get his license tho.....huh, weird. i'm gonna probe into that. so we DO need 6 hours. ugh

about all those trivial crap, do u know if i can find 'em on the internet? cuz my instructor is spanish, i can't really understand her. and then of course, she wasn't really all that helpful when it comes to those stupid rules anyway.

or if someone on CC who has already taken the test is kind enough to give me hints and stuff....:)

yes, we take our road tests in parking lots =] otherwise the other drivers would run us over. if your friend got his lisence without six hours, he got his permit after he turned 17. at 16, you need six hours and then six months of driving and you can get your license at 17. remember to ALWAYS use your turn signal, even in the k turn, and stop for three full seconds at stop signs. never go over 10 miles an hour. and i think its fine if you cross your hands, but then again, why risk it?

well i'm not 16. lol. guess i don't need those 6 hours (u sure right? lol). but i do have to wait for six months tho...should've went earlier, cuz i thought i could take the road test whenever i want and just set up an appointment on the day that i want. so now, i have to wait that long. it's nerve wracking

I had to do the 6 hours of lessons and I am 20. I actually am going today to take the road test on that infamous closed course. lol The only way you get out of the 6 hours is if a parent or guardian fills out some stupid form, but I would take the lessons over my parents anyday. (:

Huh, to get my license I didn't need to go to driving school... I just showed up one day, took the practical, and that was it. Granted, I had probably driven a solid 300 hours or so by that point, so it's not like I needed any additional practice.

My advice for the OP -- keep to the posted speed limit at all times. On my test there was this big hill and I approached it going a few mph under the speed limit, and then I saw that it was downhill from there and began to coast and so went 2-3 mph over the limit, and te guy giving me the test was like "OMFG you need to stay within the legal bounds!!11one"

As for "those trivial things," it really matters on the person testing you. After my 6 hours with an instructor + year of driving with parents, my testing instructor was like "as long as you don't run through a stop sign, then I'll pass you."

On the other hand, one of my friends had to obey all speed limits, stop for like 4 seconds or something at each stop light, and obey driving laws I never knew existed.

Oh well, it's Jersey. After a few days, your very environment will cause you to forget everything you've learned.

We need 30 hours of driving with an instructor and at least 5 hours of lecture (however, if we take more classes we get cheaper insurance) in order to take the test.

Lol, I cant' remember all of my requirements, because I got my license too long ago, but it varies from state to state. So just google it.

LOL and on my driving test I ended up going like 20 mph over the speed limit, because the flow of traffic was like 30 mph over, at LEAST, and my instructor, was like 'GAWWWWD SPEED UP YOU'RE GOING TO GET RUN OVER' and I"m like "uhhh definitely already speeding....." lolololol.

OH and apparently [since I epic failed my first driving test] you're, um, not supposed to keep going if you enter an intersection when the light is green, then it turns yellow when you're halfway through the intersection. Yeah no clue. Dunno what to do with that, lol, but apparently that's a DANGEROUS DRIVING MANEUVER [gasp] so don't do it! Haha. It's an auto-fail in GA.

I mean, what did they want me to do? Stop in the middle of the intersection? Bleahwielawfao

Six hours of on the road driving instruction is only required in NJ if you get your learners permit a 16. If you wait until 17, no driving school training is required. If you never had a licence in another state or country, you must pass a written test either in school or at a motor vehicle testing center, pass an eye test, present required identification documents, and practice driving for 6 months. You can then take your road test, and if you pass, get a license.

Wow, all the requirements are so different...for VA:

9 moths with Learner's Permit AFTER taking the Drivers test on the computer

14 hours of in car (through my school's Driver's Ed program) training

The hand-crossing thing on the steering wheel should be fine, when I was in driver's ed /driving on the road with my instructor we were taught to turn like that and they stressed it. But what do I know, I'm in Ohio. And it's interesting to compare how different it is from state to state. Here you get your learner's permit at 15 and a half and you can get your license at 16 after you've had the permit for at least 6 months but you have to have 24 hours of in class instruction then 8 hours on the road instruction.
