If I took the SAT in Freshman Year, will I be able to use this score for the National Merit or will it be necessary to retake the SAT during my junior year as I got a 2320 and am doubtful that I will be able to even match that score. I received a 230 on the PSAT this year and believe that should be okay for Semis but would like clarification on if I need to retake.
The only time you can qualify for NMSF is during the fall of your junior year, with the PSAT. You’ll then need to take the SAT during that next year to get to NMF.
With those scores as a freshman, I have no doubt you will make to NMSF/NMF. Awesome scores! Best of luck!
I took the PSAT junior year and got a 230 but I was wondering if my Freshman Score is usable or not? Because I believe only sophomore up scores count for NMF?
For HS Class of 2016 (current Juniors), the SAT test window is Oct 2013 thru Dec 2015.
Congratulations on a great score!
The Class of 2015’s semifinalists needed to take the SAT for a confirming score between Oct. 2012 and Dec. 2014.

So, logically, the Class of 2016 semis will need a confirming score from between Oct. 2013 and Dec. 2015. I’m not an authority, but I’d say that you will not be allowed to use your freshman scores and should look into retaking the SAT at the best possible time for you in 2015.
I’m actally pretty sure you CAN use old scores as long as they’re within a certain window of time. I can’t remember the cutoff for that, but it’'s not required that you take the test between oct and dec. I know some people who have used pas scores just fine
@Prospitfox you seem to have misread what earlier posters said. Did you read the years as well as the months? What the earlier posters said IS correct, at least it has been this way every year up to this time. Assuming things do not change next year, the NMSF for 2016 graduation (current juniors) will need to take or have taken the SAT between (and including) Oct 2013 and Dec. 2015, which would not have included OP’s freshman year.
The OP needs to retake the SAT.
The SAT needs to be taken either Junior year…or up to Dec of Senior year.
An SAT taken anytime October or later of SOPHOMORE year through Dec of Senior year will qualify for NMF verification. It is a window slightly over 2 years of time.
You Should study a little over the summer of your sophomore year, then take the SAT in the fall (Jr. year) right before the PSAT testing that counts. That way, you get your final SAT score done, you’ve had the summer to study, and it’s a great study prep for the PSAT which is in Oct. Then you never have to worry about testing again, since you have already gotten a 2340. Congrats.
@STEMFamily You are right.
But…the student can’t use the frosh one.
