Ok, I'm applying ED to a college that (obviously) does not have "rolling admission." The College Board website says that students will be notified of early decision acceptance "by December 15th." At high risk of asking a stupid question, does this mean that there is a possibility that notification could be (well) before that date? I ask because I would hate to file two long state university applications only to have to withdraw them a matter of days later, which will probably happen if I were not be notified before ~December 1st. I phrased this really poorly, sorry.

It’s possible that it occurs a bit (perhaps 5 days) earlier – not December 1st.

Why can’t you hold your 2 state university apps until after your ED decision arrives?

The strategy that most ED applicants take is that they have their 2ndary apps ready to go if they get reject or deferred from their ED or EA schools.

Or conversely, just send them in as you originally planned and you’ll hedge your bets. Nothing wrong with getting accepted by your ED school and withdrawing from multiple colleges – it happens all the time.

You have more options than you think. Best of luck to you

Are you concerned with the time involved in completing the “two long state university applications”? If this is the case, then suck it up and complete the apps as soon as possible. It would be unfortunate if this effort is wasted, but it is part of the process.

Are you concerned about the cost of two additional app fees (and test scores, etc.)? If this is a concern for your family, talk to your GC about qualifying for fee waivers.

Are you concerned about looking bad to adcoms by withdrawing applications within a few weeks of submitting them? As T26E4 points out, this happens all the time and there will be no negative consequences for you, your HS or your GC.
