Question about number of Science units

There are a handful of schools on my son’s list that require 3 units of Science but recommend 4 according to the Common Data Set. He has taken 3 units - my question is how much the recommended number factors into the decision making.
His intended major is Computer Science.
Thanks

No way to tell (or it just depends). If he has a good reason not to have 4 (more advanced math, first chair in symphony and band, on Varsity XCountry at the same time) then it shouldn’t be an issue. If it’s just by choice…

The reason is he chose to take 6 units of Math over 4 years, of which 2 are AP and one Advanced.

IMO that would be fine - prioritizing interests. It’s part of who he is.

Thanks again. Am I right in assuming that the units need to be all in high school? He had Science courses in 8th grade.
Thanks

If the ones in MS count toward HS requirements I think they would count here. If not, then no.

Also, which sciences? 3 years of science that are biology, chemistry, and physics are likely viewed more favorably than 3 years of science that are all variants of biology, for example.

You might ask the guidance counselor to include in his/her recommendation (if it is true) that there was a conflict between the science and the advanced math classes and that your S chose to take the math classes. That would make it abundantly clear why there are only 3 lab science classes on his transcript.

In any event it is not worth worrying over a choice that has already been made. I agree that if he has taken bio, chem, and physics he should be fine.

Also look at what is in the required CS curriculum at some likely colleges. If he has to take physics or chem, it might be worth taking an AP version of those now.
