I'm in high school, and I'm starting to think about college apps...I was wondering, if I've participated in and cleared a few olympiads, but don't have a great rank or anything, should I still mention it in my app? Like, does it count for anything or will it just seem stupid? I've done the international science & math olympiads, but my ranks aren't that special.
thank you! :)

International Science Olympiad? I know there’s the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), but there’s no such thing as International Science Olympiad (unless it isn’t part of the usual 13 international contests). Moreover, if you actually went to the IMO, you’d know how prestigious and difficult that contest is. Even nominating for it requires you to be rank in the top six high school mathematicians in your respective country.

If you went to an international Olympiad , definitely say so. As for smaller city level competitions, only say that you participated if you ranked at the top. I’d mention any national or state level competitions.

oops i meant national science olympiad! its an indian one…im american but i live in india right now…and the math olympiad I participated in was international, but it was like, anyone could sign up for it and take the exam, so idk if its that special

Mention the National Indian Science Olympiad. You are talking about the International Olympiad of Mathematics (IOM), not the International Mathematical Olympiad(IMO). I just went the through the syllabus of the (IOM): it’s pretty standard. Compared to the IMO, the IOM is child’s play. Anyway, I guess there’s no harm in mentioning the IOM- it seems pretty decent, to be honest. Just don’t saturate your application with little contests- mention the big ones only.

okay, thank you!
