Question about on campus housing

Hello everyone
Let’s say I apply to NYU early decision and I request a spot for on-campus housing on the application. I get in, but the total f/a and merit scholarships come out to like 32000-34000, which leaves me to pay the remaining 12000/yr (which I can’t). Can I then request them NOT to give me on campus housing since the tuition is too high, and instead tell them I will commute to classes? Once you request campus housing on the application are you stuck with it or can you change your mind after you get accepted?

you can send in a housing cancellation form by mid-july for a full refund, I believe

yup.
u can cancel housing june-july

youre expecting to get 34000 in financial aid and scholarships?!?! hahahah good luck with that...... the highest ive heard ppl getting is about 20000.... except for the special scholars

Thanks everyone
LOL VanessaAnne that was just a hypothetical situation but I heard that the avg f/a package for NYU is about 19000 and scholarships about 13,000, but still NYU is really miserly!

hisham, you're right. The average f/a package is around $19,000 BUT that includes merit scholarships. It's an inclusive total, so no, you won't be adding merit scholarships on top of that. Just to clear that up. In any case, you can certainly turn down housing. E.D. is binding to attend NYU, not binding to live in res.

On a side note, with the highest possible merit scholarship [$25,000 i believe] and the big loans/work study you can really get a f/a package as high as $34,000.

so, don't give up hope for a package that great, but just don't count on it actually happening. anyways, good luck with your application :)
