Question About Open House

So I know the Open House is on Friday the 16th but I’m not going to be able to make that. I can however take a flight to Boston on Saturday the 10th, and then explore the city for the rest of the day on the 10th, and then I can visit the campus on Sunday/Monday the 11th and 12th.

Is there any difference between what I’m going to be able to see and find out on the campus versus what is going to be displayed at the Open House? I’m really on the edge between Boston U and Cal Poly right now for Engineering.

Are classes in session right now or are the students going to have Spring Break? Would it be possible to sit in on a lecture maybe?

The only open houses isn’t on the 16th.
The others for CAS are
Friday, 04/09/2010
Monday, 04/12/2010
Friday, 04/16/2010
Friday, 04/23/2010

Go to applicant link ([Boston University | ApplicantLink](<a href=“System Error”>System Error))

And on the right click ‘invitations’
and click open house and rsvp

BU already had Spring Break. I don’t know about sitting in on lectures. A lot of them aren’t as big as you’d think and the professor would notice an extra person. Try sitting in on a class that takes place in Tsai or something.

What time does the open house begin and end? I am planning to go on 4/9 for the CAS open house. I already rsvp’d , are you supposed to receive a confirmation email?

D and I were at the 4/2 Open House. Check-in was at 8:30AM and there were structured activities and presentations (including lunch) until 1PM. From 1PM on, we were free to check out different buildings around the campus, including residence halls. There were also optional science tours beginning at 1PM. And, IIRC, beginning at 1:30 there was an academic fair (representatives from some of the majors and other academic programs were there). We ended up leaving around 3PM.

I don’t think D received a confirmation email, but the Open House event did show up as confirmed on her BU student portal…?

If you go to an open house, you’ll meet other students in your same boat and you can get a sense of the types of students that could be your peers. In addition, BU does a super job giving you lots of information at the open houses, so if you can in any way make one of those, I’d highly encourage it. The student leaders that guide you around campus during the open houses are also excellent examples of BU students, and they are a great source for information, like, “how is the food, really” and “what is the size of your largest class?”

i cant attend the open house because im an international and far away from boston, will i be missing anything important? P.S. Last year i went to a campus tour and information session

if you are still deciding between schools, than yes you may be missing something important - if you are already committed to going to BU, then the open houses are nice, but no, there is nothing that you could not miss. You will not want to miss summer orientation however.

yeah i am going to the orientation, and already made the deposit to BU

do they serve breakfast? just want to know because i thought i remembered reading somewhere that they do, and want to know if I should eat breakfast beforehand.

Hope so, I’m going on the 10th. 5 hour drive from NYC to BU, so gotta wake at like 3am =/

blueingreen: Yes, they did serve breakfast at the check-in/Opening Reception in the student union…more like a “continental” type of breakfast: bagels, cream cheese, croissants, danish pastry, coffee, tea, juice, etc.

hey, for those of you who already attended an open house and had a financial aid meeting,
do you know if i’d be able to make a formal appeal right then and there?
or is it more like a Q&A session?

i got almost NOTHING from BU and my EFC is 105.
even with the loans they included in my financial aid package, i’d still have to fork up $45,000

im just really worried and disappointed right now

^ im wondering the same. and dam… 45k a year.

Does anyone know where Registration actually begins? (like at what building?) this information wasn’t even on the site, which was surprising. Since I’m taking the subway there, I would like to know that so I can get off at the correct station…

Should we sign up for a campus tour in addition to the open house, or is it included?

Regarding financial aid at open house … yes, we made an appointment to review the merid aid package (0 to start) and they gave us information on how to appeal the zero merit aid. They gave us the building we needed to go to and the name and we took it from there. BTW, they said the chances of getting some were low, but the last week of April they responded with a Dean’s scholarship, 10K/year. The key is to write a compelling appeal that emphasizes new information that wasn’t part of the original application (lead in school musical in 2nd semester, current grade trend compared to overall GPA, leadership and results of what was led, etc.).

registration is in the george sherman union building on the 2nd floor.
you choose different sessions that you want to attend such as sitting in on a class or listening to deans talk about majors or students addressing student life. while traveling from building to building for different sessions, i found that i was exploring the campus too and it was very helpful. After lunch you can tour the campus on your own. There are tour guides for the dorms.

snow, did you have any need based aid?

Significa, No, we knew we would not be eligible for financial aid and, but we are not rich either. My daughter did receive financial loans (not aid) that total $5500/year, which helps as well. My understanding is that those loans were not need based.
