unfortunately, brown does not accept the commonapp and the essay topics are different.

on the commonapp, I wrote about a person who had a significant influence on me, and really described that influence

on the brown app, the question is
" In reading your application, we want to get to know you as well as we can. We ask that you use this opportunity to tell us something more about yourself that would help us toward a sense of who you are, how you think, and what issues and ideas interest you most. "

If I were to submit my common app essay, would that be acceptable (i wrote about my grandfather, who was a doctor who charged nothing in a poor village, and how this affected my beliefs)?

You could try calling Brown and asking them if it's an open ended question, just to be sure. It seems like one to me and I'm going to use an essay I wrote for another school.

I wouldn't call Brown. The question is obviously open to whatever you want to write about, so it doesn't seem like anything worth calling over. You can write pretty much whatever you want and submit pretty much any essay you've written for another school.
