If my elderly mother wants to put me on her bank accounts as "payable on death" to me, does that affect my son's financial aid in any way? Is there a place on the fafsa or css profile that I would have to claim that amount of money while she is still living?

If she wants to add me to her account so I can pay her bills for her, would that go against son's financial aid? Would I have then have to claim ownership and declare her money of Fafsa and profile? She is 78 and starting to need more help and not sure how to work out all these little things.

Thanks for your help.

If her SSN is the one listed first (or the only one) on the account, you do not need to report it.

I think happymomof1 has it right. POD would not need to be reported anywhere until you actually get the money upon her death. If she is first SSN on the account, you do not need to report it, either.

Thank you very much. It will be so much easier to just add my name and start taking over managing her bills and account. We set up a trust for most of her things but this one account is just a small account for monthly bills that was excluded from the trust. She missed a payment on a small bill and luckily there was no late fee or penalty but that’s when we both realized I should probably start helping her. Thank you both again.
