I am planning on transferring to UCLA or possibly CAL going into the field of Political Science during Fall of 2010.

I read on assist.org that the 08-09 pre-reqs for Pol Sci were Political Science 1, 2, 5, 7..and also Statistics 1. I'm done with Pol Sci 1 and will be taking Pol Sci 2, 5, and 7 during Fall. However, I planned on taking Stats 1 during Summer Session B, but it got canceled, so now I'm #8 on the waiting list for session A. Since UCLA is very competitive, is there a high chance they wont accept me for not completing one prereq because I can't fit it into Fall, assuming I don't get into my Stats class, even if I plan on taking Stats during winter or spring? I will be TAP certified btw.

Since I'm making this thread, I might as well ask you guys as my second question; what do you think my chances are of getting into CAL & UCLA. Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.69-3.71 by end of fall
Prereqs: done by this summer(hopefully)
IGETC: done by spring of 10
TAP: Yes
Essays as of now: 8/10
ECs: work part time @ fast food place, volunteer at YMCA, sociology club, swim team, during highschool I was in student government and student council both different semesters

I appreciate the help you guys!

I took stats this spring, and I got into UCLA and Cal for Poli Sci.

I would say you have a pretty good chance.

My cum. gpa is about a 3.65; it is 3.71 at community college.
I was accepted for next fall. I’m taking stats this semester and also 2 pre-reqs. it doesn’t say you need them to be completed by fall they require by spring which holds true.

Was there really a waiting list for you? I registered yesterday with like 8 spots open.

To the above poster… how hard is statistics?

nevermind, disgregard the first part of my previous post

i’m not a math person whatsoever, but statistics really wasn’t all that bad. they are word problems; it is nothing like alg.

@saco

do you mean they require them to be done by the end of spring?

i was looking through the UCLA admits thread, and i read people were rejected from UCLA for not having only one pre req done even if they were taking it during the spring before they transferred

thanks for the help you guys, keep em coming

So Stats isn’t that bad? Not that algebra intensive?

im a polisci major and was just admitted to UCLA on appeal and I am missing one prereq. I took a semester off to work on the obama campaign and I wasnt able to finish comparative.

But I took stats and IR this past spring and so did several other of my friends that got in, i dont think they care if you take the prereq the spring before as long as you will have them done by the end of spring. I have talked to several UCLA reps though that missing one prereq is basically an automatic decline, so whatever you do dont miss one, but spring before transfer should be fine.

I have no idea how I got in even though im missing one, but my EC are pretty good.

sorry for the stupid question, but when you say that you were “missing one prereq” do you mean that you had no intention of taking that one pre req it during your tenure at a community college?

also thank you for your input!

No, I definitely tried to take it. But it was only offered during the semester I took off so I wasn’t able to take it.

so can anyone here comment how how hard of a class stats is?

I am taking statistics 10: intro to statistical reasoning this summer at UCLA… just wanted to know what i am in for

ah thanks.

well if i’m not able to take statistics during summer, i’m going to have to take it during the spring because i can’t fit it into fall(im thinking about it though), and decisions come out during spring so hopefully even if i don’t have stats completed yet, UCLA will still consider accepting me. TAP should help me too.

Thats the situation I was in. I had to petition a stats class during fall last semester and I didn’t get into one so I took it this semester. When people say they were missing one pre req I think that means they didn’t take it at all. When I talked to a UCLA Rep at my CC I asked them if taking stats in the spring would hurt my chances and he said not at all. All pre-reqs just have to be done by the time you transfer. hope that helps!

Omg thank you so much for that, really, THANK YOU!

statistics; A GOOD TEACHER is very IMPORTANT.
In fact, I failed with a D the first time I took, and then retook it with a good teacher, and got an A. UCLA Accepted me.
As for the person that started this thread, my GPA is about the same as yours, UCLA took me in :)

^ very true

math is probably one of my weakest areas, so i signed up for a professor who others claim to focus more on the “logical & social” area of statistics, or something like that, rather than the mathmathic portion of it.
