Question about prerequisites

I'm currently at a community college in my second year and decided a little late I'd like to go for mechanical engineering, I wish i had thought of it earlier but its too late now. I'm behind on the standard prereqs for most colleges the maths, physics, etc I'm catching up as fast as i can but because of my schools trimester system it will take forever to finish them all. My school of choice is UCSD and im looking at UCSB as well I will be completeing IGETC and want to go through TAG for these schools.

I don't believe my chances of getting accepted into these majors are high with my low prereqs and the impacted majors. My question is, is it possible for me to get accepted to the school and finish my prereqs there, basically taking an extra year to do them all before continuing on as a normal junior level transfer might? If i get TAG'ed into the school but not the major can continue filling the prereqs at that school? and specifically UCSD or UCSB?

sorry for the long question I've been stressing over this since completing the prereqs at my CC that I hate, and would take an additional two years with their messed up handling of higher level classes.

yes :] there are quite a lot of people accepted to UCSD with missing pre-reqs (i for one in an impacted major, i am actually missing like 75% of it). good luck!

So I can get in through tag and even if I don’t make it into the major can I go undeclared and work on my prereqs til I get in? Or something of similiar fasion

Well I (and a few other board members) got into UCSD missing MOST of the pre-reqs for various engineering majors. Some bad news though, in Fall 2011 Mechanical Engineering is impacted at UCSD, so being able to get in for that particular without pre-reqs is a lot less likely.

I know how it feels being in your position as it took me a while to figure out what I’m doing and unless you started on the engineering track as soon as you started your college career it really is quite a hassle. If I decide to go to UCSD this year I will need to complete 136 quarter units to complete the major (UCSD expects 3 years after transfer for most engineering if you have ALL pre-reqs done, don’t forget you will have to take additional classes for the college they assign you), so realistically unless I want to kill myself with coursework and no summers I’m looking at for SURE 3+ years as I’m basically a 2nd quarter freshmen in terms of engineering progress. Not trying to scare you off but be SURE going the engineering route is what you want, after seeing how much time and money it would actually entail to actually get a BSE I’ve been very heavily considering switching out and trying for UCLA and CAL as an econ major next year.

I know what you mean by hassle, I was so unsure of what I wanted to do until I went to a few classes with a buddy of mine at ucsd who’s an engineering major and it clicked. I’m strongest in sciences, maths and spend most of my time tinkering on cars, gadgets etc. I’ve been studying the classes needed, classes available at my school, and what needs to be done. If things go as planned by next spring before I transfer I should only be a few classes out. A chem, physics, and maths higher than calc, then the college ge courses needed and the few mechanical classes my school doesn’t offer.

By college GE’s I mean ucsd college specific courses, I’m only 3-4 classes from fulfilling igetc and can easily be done with that by fall as required by tag. I’ve got until June 15th to sign my tag agreement if I understand correctly.

So I’m just hoping that even if I don’t get declared into the major at first, after doing all the prereqs and boosting my gpa I can get in at a later time
