What are the best private dorms for freshmen (given that one did not get in housing deposit in time) - the student in question is female from out of state. Any info on their amenities, location, and overall feel is appreciated.

Thanks!

If she is not planning to pledge a sorority, I personally like the Castilian. Very close to campus, reasonable amenities, less strict than an on campus dorm but not completely out of control. (Is UT no longer offering on-campus housing contracts? Even though it is late, it is worth checking.)

Sorority freshmen go to other private dorms, often Hardin House and Scottish Rite I think.

Tell her to be sure to drop in on some of the activities for the Out of State Students Association :)

Midwest Mom-- do you mind sharing why you prefer Castillian over Dobie or one of the other private dorms?

I would pick Dobie over Castillian and Towers if I were a boy. It’s as convenient as Castillian is, a little nicer, and has pretty good food.

If I were a girl I would pick Hardin House or SRD.

I loved SRD and would highly recommend it to any girl. I stayed there all 4 years.

I would absolutely select Castilian or Dobie over Towers. And if I were a female, I’d would absolutely select Castilian – it’s much nicer than dobie and is safer.

If you’re a girl, Castillian, Dobie and Towers shouldn’t even enter into your thoughts. SRD or Hardin all the way–particularly if you’re planning to rush.

loneranger is right about SRD and Hardin being good for girls – they are ALL-GIRLS dormitories (no males allowed). Castilian, Towers and Dobie are co-ed. Because SRD and Hardin are small, they fill up fast – Castilian, Towers and Dobie usually have rooms available even in July.
