question about profile, esp at st olaf and wheaton

St Olaf says it will meet 100% of determined need, and that it uses FAFSA and CSS (Profile) to determine that need. Assuming the online estimation is close to accurate, with profile the EFC is around $6,000 (parent and student combined contribution).

Would the St. Olaf determined need be in the same range as the CSS EFC? Also, if anyone from St. Olaf could give details of how much loan was part of their offer.

For Wheaton also, I know they do not give merit aid. But do they usually meet all/most of demonstrated need? Thanks!

I got a fin aid package from St. Olaf. It was nearly all grants with only a 2000 in loans (about 16000 in various grants (including a 5000 academic scholarship)). It met my Fafsa EFC 100%.

St. Olaf is pretty thrifty when it comes to aid. The top scholarship (Buntrock) is highly selective and covers about one-half of tuition. From there, academic scholarship amounts drop off considerably when compared to the total bill. If your child is lucky enough to have excellent musical ability, there is opportunity there, but again, even with favorable scholarship awards, you likely will have a $25K gap to fund. So minus an ECM of $6K, you likely would receive a package of loans, work-study and federal grants and could be in good shape. If you are lucky/unlucky (depending on your point of view) enough to have a determined high ECM, get ready to write a large check or take out unsubsidized loans. You will not be considered for workstudy or anything beyond what your child can receive from an academic scholarship.

So there is a good chance that, with about $6,000 EFC, there would be a package of scholarship/grant, work study, loans… I assume subsidized loans if it is qualified as needed?
