Question about Race Relations

I have Vandy very high on my list after my college counselor recently suggested I take a look at the school. 3 Seniors are going there this year and I'm good friends with one of them. I currently live in Hawaii, but I'm from Cincinnati Ohio. I've heard some things about race relations and how minorities usually cut themselves off from the rest of the student population, and the campus doesnt have much diversity overall. I am Asian but I have always had friends of every race and I believe my overall morals and values are in line with many on campus (Conservative and religious). My question is, if I make a genuine effort to get to know a diverse group on campus and am outgoing about it, will I still be relegated to mostly hanging out with the Asians on campus?

a side question to this, how is it as a minority joining a fraternity?

As you said yourself, many minorities choose to cut themselves off from the rest of the student population. Then again, there are those that don't. If you make an effort as you've indicated, I don't see it being a problem at all. As for joining a fraternity, I don't think it's a big deal at all for most people. There are some fraternities that have reputations for being racist, but I really don't know what they are like and don't want to sling mud at them.

thanks commodore. are there any more opinions out there? I am seriously considering using my ED on Vandy and this lingering question is the only thing holding me back. I'm going to visit this summer for sure, would just like to hear from any posters.

the more i think about it the less I am worried. Yes I am asian, but I am also pretty preppy, politically conservative and strongly Christian. I highley doubt that my similarities to the general student body would be outweighed by the simple fact that i'm asian-american. the only thing I really doubt is how much attention i'd be able to get from the infamous vandygirls.

Vanderbilt accepts more and more minorities every year. If that's not enough indication as to the general atsmosphere, then you're stuck.
