hi!
ok, say a student asks four teachers for recommendation letters, would the student be able to have the power to decide which ones to send where and so on?

Also how does the process go if recommendations are written for early action
yet later one would also want regular decision?

If the high school has some way to do letters of rec online (Common Application, Naviance eDocs, etc.), then yes the student can pick which teacher to send to which school. If everything is on paper, then I’m 99% sure the envelope isn’t supposed to go into the student’s hand at all.

If the student is doing early action as well as regular decision, make sure the teachers know that the student may need a copy of the rec later on so that the teacher saves a copy of whatever they write.

If you use CommonApp, then you can invite any number of teachers to submit a recommendation to the website. These recommendations then appear under “Available Recommendations” or something like that. Then, for each individual school, you can choose (from a drop-down box filled with the names of teachers that have submitted recs) which two you want for each school. Teachers who have submitted the rec for EA can also be used for RD later (rec still on website) so long as you’re on CommonApp. It will vary with other non-commonapp colleges.

Yes, you can use different recs for different schools, but you are advised to waive your right to see the recs, so you shouldn’t be able to manipulate based on the quality of the rec.
