I am a rising senior and I have a question on getting reference letters that I want to clarify.

I was planning to get ref. letters from my math/physics teacher for the math/science one and french teacher for my humanities one. But one guy I know told me that adcoms do not see french as a serious subject, and thus getting a ref. letter from my french teacher would be a bad idea. Is this true?

Also, I have another question on fundraising. Over the summer, I want to organize a fundraiser for one of the volunteer organizations that I am part of, but I have never been in charge of a fundraiser before. Could you guys please tell me how I would go about doing fundraiser (what activities)?

Thanks guys =)

When it comes to teacher recommendations, some colleges are specific to the the subjects taught (Stanford for example wanted a Math, History, English, or Science teacher), others are not. For the ones that aren't, your decision should depend on how good of a recommmedation you think he/she will write for you. I had my art teacher of four years write my Stanford recommendation (loophole was that she also taught me Art History senior year), and it was very good and probably helped me in admission.

I agree that colleges will tell you what kind of reference letters are appropriate. French is definitely a serious subject, however, some colleges want to make sure that one has good English skills, so request at least one recommendation from an English teacher. Engineering schools and similar programs may request recommendations from math and science teachers. If colleges only request that recommendations come from "academic" subjects, it's fine to use one from your French teacher.

The way to get fundraising info is to start a thread on that in the cafe or in the h.s. area. Also Google because you'll find plenty of excellent suggestions for student fundraising projects on-line.
