Iam am currently in my first spring semester at saddleback college. I plan on transferring to UCI as a mechanical engineering major. I had a question involving the major pre-requisite requirements in order to be guaranteed into my major through their TAG program. On the TAG brochure, its says:

Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in required courses
Complete one year of approved calculus
Complete one year of calculus-based physics with corresponding labs
Complete additional approved courses specified for selected major as articulated at Welcome to ASSIST

I understand everything up until the last bullet. When they say, "Complete additional approved courses specified for selected major as articulated at Welcome to ASSIST", does it mean that I have to complete EVERY SINGLE one of my major requirements, or do I just have to complete as many as possible? I really hope it's the latter and not the former, because if it is the former, then I would have to stay at community college for more than two years, which I would really hate. Please give as much info as possible, because I have been dwelling on this question for quite some time now. Also, does anyone think that UCI's TAG requirements will be even more strict for fall 2012?

I too was in the same position as you about 5 months ago. I thought UCI wanted all of the major prereqs and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to complete them all by spring '11. I applied there anyway, and they accepted me (even though i was missing 3-4 pre-reqs).

Also, on there “terms and conditions”, they haven’t forced me to complete any additional classes at my community college. Now, this might be a little different for you because you’re majoring in some type of engineering. They usually don’t want engineering majors to enter the Uni’s missing some pre-reqs, so I’d call UCI if i were you.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Yeah, I tried calling them quite a few times, but each person I talk to gives me different answers, so that made me even more confused and worried about their requirements. Is there anyone else who knows about what is required to be guaranteed into an engineering major through UCI’s TAG?

you don’t need to complete all the major prereq if you are transferring with TAG. I got accepted into UCI without completing 5 major prereq. however you should expect to stay at UCI for more than 2 years tho…

Thanks a lot, dominicfhk!!! Are you an engineering major as well? I’m fine with spending more than two years at UCI, rather than spending more time at CCC.

It depends on the campus, UCI sounds like they’re cool with that - UCD has more than 1 sheet out there showing that Engineering majors HAVE to take the entire physics series or they won’t have a valid TAG… UCSC flat out rejected my TAG because they said that there were 14 prereqs but only 5 were required (I had somewhere around 10)… the rep told me that all 14 were required o_O
